Browns to add undrafted Scottish punter

The Browns are signing undrafted Scottish free agent punter Jamie Gillan from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, a person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press. The Browns brought Gillan in for a workout before the NFL draft. They plan to sign him later this week and have him in camp to compete with starting punter Britton Colquitt, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Monday because Gillan still must pass a physical before signing. Gillan caught Cleveland’s attention — and other teams’ as well — after averaging 43.4 yards per punt last season. He was born in England […]

Rockies visit Brewers for first time since NLDS

The last time the Colorado Rockies came to Miller Park, they were riding a National League wild-card win and brimming with confidence. The Milwaukee Brewers ripped that confidence away with a sweep in the NL Divisional Series last October. The Rockies are returning to Milwaukee for the first time since the playoffs, and again they are brimming with confidence. After a 3-12 start, Colorado has turned things around and is coming off an impressive series in Atlanta. The Rockies nearly got the sweep of the three-game series, but the Braves rallied to win Sunday. Colorado has still won 10 of […]

Yankees acquire Maybin in trade with Indians

The New York Yankees added a veteran to their ailing outfield Thursday by acquiring Cameron Maybin in a trade with the Cleveland Indians, according to YES Network’s Jack Curry. The deal comes after New York placed outfielder Clint Frazier on the 10-day injured list Thursday with an ankle sprain. New York has 13 players on the IL, including outfielders Frazier, Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Aaron Hicks and Jacoby Ellsbury. With so many outfielders on the IL, the Yankees currently only have two full-time outfielders on their active roster in Brett Gardner and Mike Tauchman. Utility man Tyler Wade is also capable of playing the outfield. The […]

Vlad Jr. to join Jays, make MLB debut on Friday

For Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the long wait is over. Well, as long a wait as it could be for a precocious 20-year-old who also just happens to be the best player in the minor leagues. The Toronto Blue Jays have announced the son of Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero will make his major-league debut Friday at Rogers Centre against the Oakland A’s. Guerrero, who hit a combined .381 with 20 home runs and 78 RBI last season at four minor-league levels, was expected to spend some time in the minors this season to allow the Blue Jays to keep him under […]

Stewart signs 1-day deal to retire with Panthers

Running back Jonathan Stewart has announced he is retiring from the NFL. Stewart, who spent last season with the New York Giants, signed a one-day contract Tuesday with the Carolina Panthers. Stewart spent 10 seasons with the Panthers and is the franchise’s career leading rusher with 7,318 yards. Stewart was released after the 2017 season when the Panthers opted to build the offense around Christian McCaffrey, the eighth pick of the 2017 draft. McCaffrey went on to play 91.3 percent of the snaps this past season and set an NFL single-season record for a running back with 107 catches for 867 yards in […]

Urshela hits Yankees to 4th straight win

After the Yankees’ vaunted closer blew a 12th-inning lead, but before New York manufactured another run while striking out four times in the 14th, an Angels outfielder playing second base for the first time in his pro career dived to stop a grounder and made a fine throw to get the out at first. Out of every improbability in this epic opener of the Yankees’ West Coast trip, the identity of their offensive hero was right up there with the weirdest. Gio Urshela singled home Gleyber Torres in the 14th with his second extra-inning RBI of the night, and the […]

Bucks on brink of first playoff series win in 18 years

The Milwaukee Bucks can wipe away 18 years of frustration on Monday night. They haven’t won a playoff series since the 2000-01 season, when they reached the Eastern Conference finals. That drought can end in Detroit if they complete a sweep of the Pistons. The top-seeded Milwaukee cruised through the first three games, winning by an average of 24 points. If they lose in Game 4, the Bucks would have three more chances in the best-of-seven series to end their streak of eight straight first-round exits. The earlier the Bucks eliminate eighth-seeded Detroit, the more time they’ll have to prepare […]

Sixers beat Nets without Embiid

Joel Embiid took off his warmup gear and changed into street clothes, his left knee feeling too sore to play. Even with the All-Star center sitting down, the Philadelphia 76ers were flying high in Game 3. Ben Simmons scored a career playoff-high 31 points, Tobias Harris added 29 points and 16 rebounds and the 76ers shook off the absence of their leading scorer to beat the Brooklyn Nets 131-115 on Thursday night for a 2-1 lead in the first-round series. The 76ers relied on Simmons slashing to the basket, and Harris and JJ Redick shooting from the perimeter. “We have […]

Sox Pedroia has mor knee woes, set for tests

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who exited Wednesday’s game against the Yankees after feeling discomfort in his surgically repaired left knee, remained in New York to meet with doctors Thursday, according to multiple media reports. Pedroia left the eventual 5-3 loss after he flew out in his only at-bat in the top of the second inning. Eduardo Nunez replaced him at second base. “He felt something weird in his knee,” manager Alex Cora told reporters afterward. “He finished the at-bat and came up to me, like, ‘Hey man, it didn’t feel right there.’ I decided to take him out.” Pedroia, […]

Astros look for 10th win in a row when they visit Athletics

The Houston Astros go for an 11th straight win overall and fifth straight over the Oakland Athletics when the American League West rivals complete a two-game series Wednesday night in Oakland, Calif. After outscoring the A’s just 18-10 during a three-game sweep in Houston earlier this month, the Astros pounded last year’s division runner-up 9-1 in the series opener on Tuesday. Left-hander Wade Miley (1-1, 3.45) will go for his third win during the winning streak when he duels Oakland righty Frankie Montas (2-1, 3.18). Miley pitched the only blowout of the earlier series in Houston, shutting out the A’s for 5 2/3 innings in a 6-0 win. […]
