Scott Pioli resigns as Falcons’ assistant GM

Scott Pioli resigned Thursday after five years as assistant general manager of the Atlanta Falcons. Pioli’s seat at the personnel table had been under discussion for months, and a restructuring under general manager Thomas Dimitroff was expected. Pioli, who has 26 years in NFL personnel evaluation under his belt, and Dimitroff have been friends for decades after meeting in Cleveland. Dimitroff’s father was a scout for Bill Belichick’s staff, which included Pioli. “After careful consideration and ongoing dialog with Thomas over the past year I have decided to step away from my position as the assistant general manager of the […]

New York Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar will undergo right shoulder labrum repair surgery on Monday and is expected to miss the remainder of the season, the team announced on Wednesday.  Andujar suffered the injury just three games into the season and spent all of April on the injured list. He returned to action on May 4 and made nine appearances before returning to the IL on Monday. James Wagner of the New York Times reported the expected recovery timetable is four to six months. Cole Ragans needs 2nd TJ surgery

More injury news came from the Texas Rangers’ farm system Monday, and it’s more bad news for former first-round pick Cole Ragans. The left-hander, selected 30th overall in 2016, will undergo a second Tommy John elbow reconstructive surgery on Wednesday after the new graft failed. “Unfortunately Cole’s graft is torn,” Rangers president and general manager Jon Daniels said. “It’s obviously concerning. This is the first Tommy John surgery we’ve had that’s failed.” Ragans was initially injured in spring training last year and underwent Tommy John surgery March 23, 2018. He started a throwing program in October, was throwing off a mound in […]

Ohtani hits first HR of season in Angels’ win

One week into Shohei Ohtani’s return to the Los Angeles Angels, the lineup is looking sharp. Minnesota ace Jose Berrios bore the brunt of their batting success on Monday night. Ohtani hit his first home run of the season, a towering two-run shot in the third inning against Berrios, and Tommy La Stella hit the go-ahead homer in the sixth to give the Angels a 5-4 victory over the Twins. “I’ve been hitting the ball in the air recently,” Ohtani said through an interpreter. “I think it showed today that I’m improving.” The Angels are 5-2 on this nine-game trip […]

Kerr confirms KD out remainder of Rockets series

Kevin Durant is done for the rest of the Western Conference semifinals, and head coach Steve Kerr said the Golden State Warriors must grasp the task ahead: Replace the best player in the NBA. “He’s been the best player in the NBA in the playoffs. He’s been phenomenal,” Kerr said Thursday night, confirming Durant is several days or more from being able to play basketball. A return could potentially come in the Western Conference finals, but the Warriors, leading the Houston Rockets 3-2 in the semifinals entering Friday’s Game 6 at Houston, still need a win without Durant. “Well, we’ll […]

Bucks beat Celtics to advance to East Final

The Bucks are headed to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2001 after beating the Celtics 4-1 in the second round. Giannis Antetokounmpo paced Milwaukee with 20 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Kyrie Irving led Boston in scoring with 15 points in the final game of the season — now, eyes turn towards Irving’s impending free agency. Patriots to sign veteran OT Veldheer

The New England Patriots are planing on signing offensive tackle Jared Veldheer, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. They two parties may not make the deal official until later this week. That may be because New England wants to keep Veldheer from counting against the compensatory pick formula for the 2020 NFL Draft. Signings made on May 8 or later will not come into play for the Patriots’ draft compensation for their 2019 free agent, which is likely to earn them two third-round picks. Pelissero adds Veldheer is expected to sign a one-year deal worth up to $6.5 million and […]

Bears trade for Raiders Kicker Pineiro

Having already collaborated on a trade that shook the NFL world before the 2018 season, the Bears and Raiders pulled off another swap on Monday. Oakland sent kicker Eddy Pineiro to Chicago in return for a conditional 2021 seventh-round draft pick, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported. While the latest Bears-Raiders trade is ions removed from the colossal Khalil Mack deal, it is evidence of the Bears searching high and low for a new kicker. Cody Parkey infamously missed a “double-doink” field goal attempt that was partially blocked to lose to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Card Round. Since then, Parkey has been released, tryouts have been had, four kickers with no […]

Dodgers return home to face Braves

The Los Angeles Dodgers will return to the more predictable comforts of home Monday, which could pose a challenge for an Atlanta Braves team that feels it might have some of the answers it has been looking for early in the season. The Dodgers and Braves last met in the National League Division Series last October, won by the Dodgers in four games, and the teams will get together for the first time in 2019 on Monday night at Dodger Stadium. Los Angeles enters after a crushing 8-5 defeat at San Diego on Sunday, when pinch hitter Hunter Renfroe hit a game-ending grand slam. […]
