Cardinals win NL Central; Brewers settle for wild card

The Cardinals on Sunday needed a win over the Cubs at home or a Brewers loss to the Rockies to win the National League Central for 2019. As it turns out, St. Louis handled its own business, as they homered three times en route to a 9-0 win over the Cubs. Ace Jack Flaherty pitched seven shutout innings, which means he’s allowed a total of 12 runs over his last 16 starts heading into the playoffs. The St. Louis win means that the Cardinals will advance to the National League Division Series against the Braves, who won the NL East. Game 1 is scheduled for Oct. 3 in Atlanta. The Brewers, meantime, […]

Angels outlast Astros preventing Houston clinch

The Los Angeles Angels made nine pitching changes, including seven in a four-inning span. Those pitchers grinded and fought and managed to keep the mighty Astros scoreless when they loaded the bases three times in the final five innings. The Angels refused to play like a team with nothing to play for, and that’s why Houston’s celebration of the AL’s best record has to wait at least another day. ”Everybody did a fantastic job,” he added. ”We’re looking to finish strong. We’ve got to look forward for next year, so everybody has got to do their job and we’ve got to finish […]

Murray wins 1st tour-level match since January

Andy Murray said victory over Tennys Sandgren at the Zhuhai Championships in China was one of his best as he continued his return from hip surgery. The Scot prevailed 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 6-1 for his first singles victory at Tour level since January. Murray, who had lost to world number 69 Sandgren in North Carolina last month, will play Australian world number 31 Alex de Minaur in the second round. “In some ways it’s one of the best wins that I’ve had,” said the 32-year-old. “Not in terms of just getting through that today, but everything that’s gone into getting […]

Vikings re-sign Treadwell for depth; Beebe to IR

The Minnesota Vikings re-contracted recipient Laquon Treadwell four weeks after separating from the previous first round, the team said Tuesday. The change reflects the concerns of the Vikings about their great recipient depth after Chad Beebe was placed on the injured reserve on Tuesday. He suffered on Sunday against the Oakland Raiders between 34 and 14 ligament tears in the ankle and should undergo no surgery according to a league source. Recipient Josh Doctson was placed in an injured reserve at the beginning of the season. These injuries had reduced Minnesota to three healthy recipients – Adam Thielen, Stefon Diggs […]

Marlins look to finish off Mets’ playoff hopes

The Mets will try to do their part to avoid elimination from contention Tuesday night, when they host the Miami Marlins in the second game of a four-game series. Noah Syndergaard (10-8, 4.22 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Mets against the Marlins’ Sandy Alcantara (5-14, 4.00 ERA) in a battle of right-handers. The Marlins delivered a big blow to the Mets’ already meager wild-card hopes Monday night, when Jorge Alfaro hit two homers, including a grand slam, in Miami’s 8-4 victory. The Mets (81-75) fell five games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the race for the National League’s second wild card and 5 1/2 games […]

Vettel wins Singapore GP

Sebastian Vettel ended his 13-month win drought with a controversial victory in the Singapore Grand Prix. The German benefited from unusual Ferrari strategy to leapfrog team-mate Charles Leclerc into the lead. Leclerc told the team over the radio that it was “unfair” and it will do little to reduce tension within the team. But it was a much-needed victory for the four-time world champion who has had a difficult, error-strewn season and faced questions about his status and future. The German has continued a run of one major driving error every three races since June last year, and seen Leclerc, […]

New Orleans Saints veteran quarterback Drew Brees underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb of his throwing hand this afternoon, according to coach Sean Payton. The surgery was performed in Los Angeles by Dr. Steven Shin, the hand specialist Brees saw for his first consultation. Payton said the Saints are optimistic, declined to give a timetable for his return. Brees posted on Instagram that the surgery was successful and did his best to give a thumb’s up in his selfie. Payton said Wednesday that the team does not plan to place Brees on the injured reserve as […]

Ingram, Ball full participants in workouts

Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball appear well on their way to being ready for the start of the 2019-20 season. According to Andrew Lopez of ESPN, the two pieces who came over as part of the trade that sent Anthony Davis to the Los Angeles Lakers have been full participants in the Pelicans’ voluntary offseason workouts. Injuries haven’t held back either one, which is notable because Ingram’s final game came on March 2 before he was shut down for deep vein thrombosis in his right arm. Ball’s final game last season came on Jan. 19 because of an ankle injury. Durability has been an issue […]

Brewers face Padres’ Paddack amid playoff push

The San Diego Padres were eliminated from any semblance of playoff contention long ago. Even so, rookie Chris Paddack will get one more chance Tuesday night to impact the pennant race. Paddack will make what is expected to be his final start as the visiting Padres face the surging Milwaukee Brewers in the second game of a four-game series. Paddack (9-7, 3.38 ERA) is scheduled to oppose the Brewers’ Brandon Woodruff (11-3, 3.75 ERA) in a battle of right-handers. The Brewers remained red-hot Monday night, when Cory Spangenberg collected three RBIs against his former team and Zach Davies combined with three relievers on a two-hitter in a 5-1 win over […]

Canelo climbing 2 weight classes to fight Kovalev

Canelo Álvarez will move up two weight classes to challenge Sergey Kovalev for the WBO light heavyweight championship on 2 November at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, the Mexican boxer announced on Friday. Álvarez (52-1-2, 35 KOs), who is coming off a close but uncontroversial points win over Daniel Jacobs in a middleweight championship unification fight on Cinco de Mayo weekend, will take aim at a world title in a fourth division after negotiations for a much-anticipated third fight with nemesis Gennady Golovkin fell through. “The second phase of my career is continuing just as we had planned, and that’s why we are […]
