Jets QB Darnold ruled out indefinitely with mononucleosis

A new coach, a marquee running back and a second-year quarterback brought renewed hope to the Jets this season. But one week in, that optimism has quickly diminished. Sam Darnold has mononucleosis and will not play on Monday night against the Cleveland Browns (0-1), Coach Adam Gase announced Thursday. There is no timetable for his return. Darnold had received a diagnosis of strep throat Tuesday night, but further tests revealed he had mono. Trevor Siemian, who signed a one-year deal with the Jets in March, will start in his place Monday night. “Anytime you lose your quarterback, it’s a big deal,” said Dowell Loggains, […]

Texans release veteran CB Colvin

A high-priced NFL player isn’t always safe. That’s what Aaron Colvin found out Tuesday after he struggled in a high-profile, nationally televised game. The Texans, who dropped a heart-breaking 30-28 loss to the Saints on Monday night in New Orleans, released the veteran cornerback, a little more than a year into his four-year, $34 million contract, according to NFL Network. He will get $7.5 million for 2019, which was guaranteed. Colvin was the weakest link on a secondary which allowed 362 yards passing in the game. He gave up two touchdowns in the second half. The first came on a 9-yard […]

Yankees’ Tauchman likely out rest of season

Mike Tauchman made his name as one of the most productive members in the Yankees’ “next man up” brigade, helping keep their winning season afloat despite a Major League-record 29 players on the injured list. Now it will be someone else’s turn to carry the load. Tauchman was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain of his left calf that will keep him out of action for approximately six to eight weeks, the Yankees announced on Monday. Manager Aaron Boone said that the diagnosis effectively rules the 28-year-old out for the rest of the season. “I hurt for him,” Boone said. “He’s […]

Nats’ Suzuki day-to-day with elbow inflammation

Kurt Suzuki hurt his elbow on a throw to second base in saturday night’s loss, and though it looks like he’ll avoid an IL stint, the Nationals called up backstop Tres Barrera. Before Raudy Read came on as a late-game replacement for Kurt Suzuki saturday night, the 2019 Washington Nationals had used just two catchers all season, with Suzuki and Yan Gomes in the gear behind the plate for each of the 140-plus games they’d played to that point. Suzuki took over for Gomes in the bottom of the seventh, after Nats’ skipper Davey Martinez hit for Gomes with a runner on third and two out […]

Sanchez to have season ending surgery

The Astros acquired Aaron Sanchez from the Jays at the trade deadline hoping to bolster the back end of their rotation. He did briefly, tossing 11 innings of one-run ball in his first two starts. he was lit up for six runs in his August 15 start, however, and left his August 20 start after two and a third innings of three-run ball. He has not pitched since, with the team originally calling the problem a sore pectoral muscle. The team had expected him to return this season, but general manager Jeff Luhnow said Thursday morning that he would have the unspecified […]

Goff extension with Rams worth $134M

The Los Angeles Rams have handed out a four-year contract extension to quarterback Jared Goff worth $134m, including a record $110m of that being guaranteed. Goff, the first pick of the 2016 NFL Draft, led the Rams to their first Super Bowl in 18 seasons back in February, when they lost out narrowly to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Atlanta. After a dodgy rookie season, Goff has flourished in the two seasons Sean McVay has been head coach, winning two divisional titles and making that one Super Bowl appearances, and the team have tied their colors to the mast in […]

Dimitrov shocks Federer at US Open

Roger Federer suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals at the US Open. The 20-time grand slam winner had looked destined for a box-office final against Rafael Nadal in what would have been the great rivals’ first meeting at Flushing Meadows. But Bulgarian Dimitrov tore up that script with a first ever win over the Swiss, who needed a medical time-out and looked out of sorts throughout a five-set defeat. Punters on Arthur Ashe for the night session might have feared being short-changed after Serena Williams ran through Wang Qiang in 44 minutes. After all, Dimitrov had not […]

Jets hire ex-Steeler Ward as offensive assistant

The New York Jets hired former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward as a full-time offensive assistant. Ward worked with the Jets during the summer as a coaching intern and impressed coach Adam Gase and his staff. Wide receiver Robby Anderson praised Ward during camp for helping him try to find ways to improve his game this season. Jets general manager Joe Douglas had been interested in having Ward join the Eagles’ staff and reached out to the former wide receiver when he was hired by the Jets in June. Ward will work closely again with wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson. ”That’s a great addition […]

Jets claim kicker Vedvik off waivers from Vikings

For the second time in three weeks, the New York Jets have changed kickers, acquiring Kaare Vedvik on waivers from the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday and releasing Taylor Bertolet. The Jets actually expressed interest in trading for Vedvik three weeks ago, but the Baltimore Ravens opted to deal him to the Vikings for a fifth-round pick. The Norwegian-born Vedvik struggled so much that the Vikings decided to part ways with him, a costly blunder because of the draft capital they surrendered. Vedvik made only one of four field goal attempts in two games, missing from 37, 43 and 54 yards. His only make came from 27 yards. The Jets […]
