Federer defeats Djokovic to advance to semifinals of ATP Finals

Roger Federer will be the first to accept that defeating Novak Djokovic at the ATP Finals on Thursday night doesn’t make up for his gut-wrenching defeat in the Wimbledon final but he avoided a double blow in London and inflicted some woe on the Serb himself. Federer’s convincing 6-4, 6-3 victory in front of a roughly 18,000-strong crowd that backed him as vociferously as in July’s Wimbledon final — when he held a pair of match points on his own serve — sent him to the semifinals at the year-end championships at Djokovic’s expense. “I’m just happy at the level […]

George could make Clippers debut at New Orleans

Paul George could make his Clippers debut when L.A. visits New Orleans on Thursday. He hasn’t played this season because of surgery on both shoulders that took place before he was traded to the Clippers in the summer. Los Angeles also has been limiting fellow newcomer Kawhi Leonard’s action on back-to-backs for load management. Generally he has sat out the first game of back-to-backs, but he started and played 41 minutes in a 102-93 loss at Houston on Wednesday night, leaving his status for Thursday unclear. Whether or not George and Leonard take the court together for the first time Thursday, fans […]

Djokovic, Federer set for ATP Finals showdown

Novak Djokovic succumbed to the extraordinary Dominic Thiem at the ATP Finals Tuesday as the Austrian became the first man to qualify for the semifinals in London. Despite winning the first set tie-break, Djokovic was second best to Thiem, who found his form to comeback 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 7-6 (7-5) in a thrilling meeting. The 26-year-old Thiem is competing at his fourth consecutive ATP Finals but had never defeated Djokovic on the hard court before. “This was really one of these special matches, what I’ve practiced all my life for, all my childhood for,” said Thiem. “Really epic one in an amazing atmosphere, […]

Astros Yordan Alvarez wins AL Rookie of the year

Yordan Álvarez may have gotten a late start to his rookie season, but the Houston Astros slugger left no doubt that he belongs at the head of his class. Álvarez, a 21-year-old designated hitter with game-changing power, was named the AL Rookie of the Year on Monday by a unanimous vote of the Baseball Writers Association of America. Baltimore Orioles pitcher John Means ended second in the voting. Tampa Bay Rays infielder Brandon Lowe was third. The American League did not feature a particularly strong crop of rookies beyond Álvarez. He established his superiority almost instantly upon his call up on […]

Raptors end Lakers´s winning streak

In the opening weeks of life after Kawhi, the defending champs are learning they might be deeper than even they recognized. They definitely had enough to hold off Staples’ marquee tenants in a remarkable early-season victory. Pascal Siakam had 24 points and 11 rebounds, Fred VanVleet ended with 23 points and 10 assists and the Raptors snapped the Los Angeles Lakers’ seven-game winning streak with a 113-104 win Sunday night. Chris Boucher matched his career high with 15 points for the Raptors, who have won three straight and six of seven. Two days after they lost starter Kyle Lowry to a broken left thumb and […]

Browns, center JC Tretter agree to Three-year extension

The Browns are in no position to let any of their quality offensive linemen get away. With insecurity at three of the five starting offensive line positions, it seems general manager John Dorsey and his staff have decided to keep center JC Tretter around. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Browns have agreed to a three-year extension with Tretter for $32.5 million, including $23 million guaranteed. Tretter and left guard Joel Bitonio are the only two offensive linemen who have not been rumored to possibly being replaced. Right guard Eric Kush has been replaced by Wyatt Teller, while Greg Robinson was replaced at left tackle by Justin McCray two weeks […]

Clippers Paul George set for first full-contact practice since shoulder surgeries

In the months heading into the 2019-20 season, the belief was that All-Star forward Paul George would miss some time to begin the year. George has been on a steady path towards recovery from dual shoulder surgery that he underwent over the offseason. However, the L.A. Clippers have honed in on a return date to have George back in the mix. Before the Clippers made the big-splash moves to land both Kawhi Leonard and George over the summer back in July, the latter had gone through offseason surgery on both shoulders. Injuries hampered the 29-year-old down the stretch of the season and into the playoffs that impacted his […]

Djokovic wins 5th Paris Masters title

World number one Novak Djokovic saw off Canadian Denis Shapovalov 6-3 6-4 to acquire a record-extending fifth Paris Masters title on Sunday in a warning to his rivals ahead of the ATP Finals. The Serbian faced only one break point in another extraordinary display to claim a 34th career Masters title against world number 28 Shapovalov, who was playing his first final at that level. “I served very well, there were not many rallies in the match. A break in each set was enough, it was the best serving performance in this tournament,” said Djokovic, who did not drop a […]

Nationals’ Anthony Rendon tops list of MLB free agents on market

Washington third baseman Anthony Rendon became a free agent Thursday, a day after homering to spark the Nationals’ seventh-inning comeback in Game 7 of the World Series. Houston pitcher Gerrit Cole also went free after warming up in the bullpen but never getting into the season finale. And Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, the World Series MVP, could be joining them in the next few days. He has the right to opt out of his contract, which has $100 million over four years left. “I think it’s hard to kind of fast-forward,” Astros manager AJ Hinch said. “Seasons end really fast. I don’t care if you get all the […]
