Titans make Byard highest-paid safety

Landon Collins’ reign as the highest-paid safety in NFL history is over after barely four months. The Tennessee Titans on Wednesday announced that they’ve signed Kevin Byard to a multi-year contract extension.  According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Byard is now the highest-paid safety in the history of football, after the All-Pro signed a five-year, $70.5 million contract that contains $31 million in guarantees. A third-round pick in 2016, Byard broke out in his second NFL season, making the Pro Bowl and the All-Pro first team while leading the league with eight interceptions. Royals’ Keller set for hometown debut in Atlanta

Kansas City’s Brad Keller will have extra motivation — and a few additional fans in the seats — when he faces the Atlanta Braves in the finale of a two-game series on Wednesday. Keller, who is from Flowery Branch, Ga., a northeastern suburb of Atlanta, will make his first career appearance against his hometown team at Atlanta’s SunTrust Park. The right-hander was drafted and signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013 before being acquired by Kansas City in 2017. Keller (6-9, 4.18 ERA) will be opposed by veteran Atlanta right-hander Julio Teheran (5-6, 3.61). The Royals won the series opener 5-4 on Tuesday when they rallied for three […]

Falcons safety Wilcox suffers ACL injury

The Atlanta Falcons reportedly lost some of their safety depth during Monday’s practice. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, J.J. Wilcox suffered a torn ACL and will miss the 2019 campaign. Rapoport noted the Georgia Southern product was expected to be Atlanta’s third safety once the season started. The Falcons signed Wilcox to a one-year deal this offseason after he spent time with the Indianapolis Colts and New York Jets last season. The veteran entered the league in 2013 when the Dallas Cowboys selected him with a third-round pick, and he spent his first four years with the NFC East team before playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017. Wilcox has six interceptions in his career, three […]

Pistons claim Christian Wood off waivers

The Bucks waived Christian Wood late last season to ensure avoiding the luxury tax. The Pelicans claimed him. Wood had played well in limited minutes with the 76ers, Hornets and Bucks and in the NBA’s minor league since going undrafted in 2015. New Orleans gave him his biggest opportunity yet. In 24 minutes per game over eight games, he averaged 17 points and eight rebounds. But the Pelicans filled their roster for next season and waived Wood. Detroit will take advantage. Wood’s $1,645,357 minimum salary is unguaranteed until the regular season. So, Detroit could still waive him before the season. But it seems he’ll at least […]

Royals put Mondesi on IL with shoulder injury

Kansas City Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday, one day after partially dislocating his left shoulder in Tuesday’s game against the Chicago White Sox. Mondesi suffered the injury while diving for a foul popup from Chicago’s Yolmer Sanchez in the fifth inning. He didn’t make the catch and was holding his left arm while leaving the field. Mondesi has been enjoying a solid season, batting .266 with seven homers, 52 RBIs and a major league-leading 31 stolen bases in 82 games. Kansas City recalled infielder Humberto Arteaga from Triple-A Omaha to replace Mondesi. Arteaga […]

Phillies’ Bruce to have MRI on strained oblique

The Phillies could be without Jay Bruce for an extended stretch as the outfielder left Tuesday night’s game with a strained muscle near his ribcage. Bruce grabbed his side after a check swing in the third inning against the Dodgers. Manager Gabe Kapler and a trainer immediately checked on him and then lifted him. Bruce will have an MRI on Wednesday. “It’s something in my rib cage, the front of my rib cage, which is different than an oblique,” Bruce said. “I know it’s all kind of intertwined in there. But I’ve never had anything this far up front in […]
