Copa America postponed until 2021

On Tuesday morning, South American soccer’s organizing body Conmebol reiterated that it would be postponing the Copa América until 2021 in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The Copa América is South America’s flagship continental competition, involving the national teams of 10 nations, and was planned for June and July 2020. The decision was first reported by Brazilian journalist Martín Fernandez, who writes for Globoesporte, and later confirmed by Conmebol. The news comes at the same time as UEFA, Conmebol’s European equivalent, has decided to postpone the 2020 European Championships until 2021. The decisions were taken in conjunction. Spring Training has been suspended and Opening Day will be pushed back at least two weeks, though that remains subject to change. On Friday, MLB and the MLBPA informed teams that players have three options during the shutdown: stay at their team’s spring training facility, return to their offseason homes, or return to their team’s home city. MLB and the MLBPA are still working through the logistics of the shutdown, including a potential roster […]

Titans release RB Dion Lewis, LB Cameron Wake

The Tennessee Titans have a big question to answer at running back, but it won’t include Dion Lewis. Tennessee is releasing Lewis, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source informed of the situation. The Titans announced Lewis’ release along with the parting of ways with defensive end Cam Wake. Wake is a five-time Pro Bowl selections, but played just one campaign in Tennessee. The 38-year-old spent 10 seasons with the Dolphins before coming over to the Titans last offseason. Patriots exercise option on CV Jason McCourty

Free agency is still a couple of weeks away but moves are starting to be made around the league. One minor one involving the Patriots happened Wednesday. According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, the Patriots intend to pick up Jason McCourty’s team option for 2020, which could earn him roughly $3.8 million with a cap hit around $5.5 million. Obviously the first thing that comes to mind when hearing the news is perhaps this will serve as an added incentive for his twin brother, Devin, to return to the Patriots. Devin McCourty is set to hit the free agency market […]

Simmons is the Sixers’ primary ball-handler and averages 16.9 points, 8.3 assists, 7.9 rebounds and a league-best 2.2 steals a night. Nationals ace Max Scherzer misses start due to fatigue on side

Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer was removed from Tuesday’s scheduled start versus Miami due to fatigue on his right side. “There’s not even a strain. There’s no MRIs. There’s nothing like that,” Scherzer said. “This is purely just a fatigue and endurance thing.” The 35-year-old right-hander said his right side has lagged behind the rest of his body as he attempts to build strength in preparation for the campaign. The fatigue is in the area of the latissimus dorsi, serratus and oblique muscles. “It’s the one spot that’s a little bit behind,” Scherzer said. He currently isn’t feeling pain when […]

Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun undergoes surgery to repair broken jaw

Texas Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun had surgery to repair his broken jaw Monday, a day after being hit in the face by a fastball. Surgeons were prepared to wire Calhoun’s jaw shut but instead installed a plate to steady the fracture, which should make for a faster recovery.  Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Calhoun would be released from the hospital this week, possibly Tuesday, and will be re-evaluated in two weeks, at which time Texas may get a better idea of his timetable for a return. Daniels said doctors had not yet determined if Calhoun had a concussion. While […]

Mike Adams announces retirement

Safety Mike Adams has decided to call it a career. Adams announced his retirement during an appearance on NFL Network on Wednesday. Adams signed with the Texans last September and appeared in eight matches over the regular season and playoffs for the team. The 2019 season was Adams’ 16th in the NFL and that was an impressive run given the quiet start to his career. Adams went undrafted coming out of Delaware and failed to make the 49ers out of camp, but did make it to the active roster that November.
