Robson Conceicao dominates Xavier Martinez, targets rematch against Oscar Valdez

When Robson Conceicao challenged Oscar Valdez for a 130-pound title in September, he wilted down the stretch in a controversial decision loss. In his first bout since the first pro defeat of his career, Conceicao fought far more aggressively and dominated en route to a unanimous-decision triumph over Xavier Martinez on Saturday in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The judges scored the bout 98-92, 99-91 and 100-90. With the impressive performance in the 10-round ESPN main event, Conceicao (17-1, 8 KOs), 33, set himself up for another title opportunity at 130 pounds. “I was able to be dominant this evening because I put […]

Singapore Grand Prix to remain in F1 until 2028

Formula One has signed a seven-year deal to keep the Singapore Grand Prix on its schedule until 2028. The street circuit debuted as F1’s first night race in 2008 and has become a high-profile event on the calendar ever since. The race was cancelled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but is set to return this year and remain as part of F1’s expanding schedule through to 2028. The deal was struck by F1 with the Singapore Grand Prix promoter and the country’s tourist board. Singapore’s previous contract was a four-year deal agreed in 2017, meaning it […]

Trilogy fight between Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez and Juan Francisco Estrada called off due to COVID

Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez won’t face Juan Francisco Estrada in a hotly anticipated trilogy fight after all. Estrada withdrew from the fight after he became symptomatic with COVID, sources tell ESPN. In his place, 112-pound champion Julio Cesar Martinez has agreed to a deal for a 115-pound fight with Gonzalez on March 5 in San Diego, sources said. Martinez (18-1, 14 KOs) is an explosive puncher who is trained by Eddy Reynoso at Canelo Alvarez’s San Diego gym. New York Mets GM says his team had an understanding with the New York Yankees on hiring of Eric Chavez as hitting coach

Mets general manager Billy Eppler stated he spoke to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman well before hiring away Eric Chávez as the team’s hitting coach and that both sides had an understanding that Chávez might end up in Queens. Chávez, 44, was hired by the Yankees in November as one of two assistants to new hitting coach Dillon Lawson — and projected to take on a role beyond his title. A few weeks later, the Mets hired the 17-year big leaguer to be their primary hitting coach. Eppler said Monday that he was in contact with Cashman before the Yankees hired Chávez, and […]

MLB Players Association to make counteroffer to league in Monday meeting

The Major League Baseball Players Association plans to make an in-person labor proposal to the league on Monday, sources told ESPN, countering MLB’s offer last week that did little to loosen the gridlock that has gripped the sport after the league locked out the players Dec. 2. Should the players’ offer do little to advance the negotiations that thus far haven’t yielded any substantive progress, the scheduled start to spring training in mid-February will grow that much unlikelier. And the longer discussions on a new collective-bargaining agreement last, the more they jeopardize Opening Day on March 31. The gap between […]

Free-agent shortstop Carlos Correa hires Scott Boras to represent him

Star free-agent shortstop Carlos Correa has hired agent Scott Boras, Correa told ESPN over the phone Tuesday night. On the 47th day of Major League Baseball’s lockout, with transactions frozen and Correa still without a team, the 27-year-old player joined Boras, the veteran agent who before the work stoppage negotiated $630 million in deals for Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Max Scherzer. Correa, who in seven campaigns with the Houston Astros made two All-Star teams and won the 2017 World Series, entered this winter on the top of most free-agent boards. While multiple teams expressed interest in Correa, Seager signed the pre-lockout megadeal with the Texas Rangers for $325 million […]

Los Angeles Dodgers promote Brandon Gomes to general manager

Brandon Gomes, a former major league pitcher just six years removed from his playing days, has been named general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, a position left vacant since Farhan Zaidi’s departure to the San Francisco Giants. Gomes, 37, has a long history with Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, who initially traded for Gomes when he served as GM of the Tampa Bay Rays in December 2010. Shortly after Gomes retired at the end of the 2016 season, Friedman — two years into his tenure with the Dodgers at that point — hired him as the organization’s pitching performance coordinator.
