Alvarez-Ryder will take place at Akron Stadium, a soccer venue with a capacity of nearly 50,000. The fight will be Alvarez’s first in Mexico since 2011, when he defeated Kermit Cintron to retain his 154-pound title. That event was in Mexico City. Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman suffered a minor hamstring injury Tuesday while playing for Canada in the World Baseball Classic. Canada manager Ernie Witt stated Freeman, who was not in the lineup Wednesday against Mexico, is out of the WBC “for now.” “He’s out of this tournament for now,” Witt told reporters, according to the Los Angeles Times. “The Dodgers decided that. Warriors beat Suns 123-112 for 8th straight home victory

The Golden State Warriors were tired of losing to the division-rival Suns this season and set their mind on defending versus Phoenix just as they did against the talented Bucks last game. Klay Thompson scored 33 of his 38 points in the first half, Stephen Curry added 23 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and the Warriors defeated the Suns 123-112 on Monday night. “There’s always a little bit of extra motivation when you got smacked a couple times against a certain team but it’s more so about our own focus,” Curry said. Thompson made eight 3-pointers and shot 14 of 23 overall. “We knew […]

Bob Bryan replaces Mardy Fish as U.S. Davis Cup captain

One of many highlights of Bob Bryan’s time as half of a record-breaking men’s doubles duo was helping the United States claim the 2007 Davis Cup — the last time the country succeeded the competition. Now Bryan will try to end that drought from the sideline. The U.S. Tennis Association on Monday revealed Bryan’s appointment as Davis Cup captain, replacing Mardy Fish. Bryan’s first matches in charge will come during the group stage matches in September. Bryan and his twin brother, Mike, earned a record 16 Grand Slam championships together, 119 tour-level titles and an Olympic gold medal in doubles, finishing […]

Bryce Harper sets All-Star break as ballpark for return

Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper has joined his teammates at spring training and hasn’t ruled out being back by the All-Star break following Tommy John surgery. “Things can change either way,” the two-time National League MVP said Thursday. “I could be after, I could be before. But as right now, that’s the date we kind of solidified. We’re not going to rush. We’re going to be smart about it.” Dressed in red Phillies shorts with pinstripes and a white workout shirt, Harper sat on top of a picnic table outside the clubhouse. “Just excited to be back out here, some sunshine and some […]

Pau Gasol becomes 12th Lakers player to have jersey retired

Pau Gasol, the perfect complementary player to Kobe Bryant, was paid the best compliment possible by his former team: The Lakers retired his jersey. “I mean life goes by pretty fast, right? In the blink of an eye, you can be a kid playing basketball in your school with your buddies, then all of a sudden, you’re realizing your dream,” Gasol said before the Lakers’ 112-103 win over the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night. “But tonight, it really exceeds any dream or expectation that I’ve had because it means so much. And obviously with Kobe up there, it just adds something meaningful and powerful, and sad […]

Bryce Harper (elbow) to report to Phillies camp Wednesday

Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper says he will report to spring training Wednesday as he continues recovering from elbow surgery and then determine when he can return full time. He underwent reconstructive right elbow surgery in November, causing him to miss the beginning of spring training. The 30-year-old will have some catching up to do when he arrives in Clearwater, Florida. His teammates have been adjusting to new pitch clock rules, part of Major League Baseball’s efforts to speed up the game. Looking for the […]

76ers rally to win 133-130, snap Bucks’ 16-game streak

Nothing could faze the Philadelphia 76ers. Not the loss of two starters. Not an 18-point deficit late in the third quarter. Not even the fact they were facing the NBA’s hottest team on the road. Joel Embiid made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 41.4 seconds left and the 76ers rallied to defeat Milwaukee 133-130 on Saturday night, snapping the Bucks’ 16-game winning streak. “You find something that works and you try to stick with it,” said James Harden, who had 38 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. “We found something late, in that fourth quarter, and we just stuck with it. We got some […]
