76ers fire coach Doc Rivers after three seasons

The Philadelphia 76ers dismissed coach Doc Rivers on Tuesday, the team revealed. The Sixers were eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals for a third consecutive season, losing 112-88 in Game 7 to the Boston Celtics on Sunday. The search for a new coach is expected to include Mike Budenholzer, Sam Cassell, Mike D’Antoni, Nick Nurse, Frank Vogel and Monty Williams, sources told ESPN. Rivers delivered a 154-82 (.653) record in his three seasons, including 54 victories in 2022-23 — the franchise’s most since 2000-01. The Sixers were one of three teams in the top 10 in both offensive and defensive efficiency, according to ESPN Stats […]

Kentucky Derby winner Mage will run at the Preakness on May 20

Kentucky Derby winner Mage will run in the 148th Preakness following an encouraging workout at Churchill Downs, his co-owner stated. Mage galloped about 1½ miles at a brisk pace with exercise rider J.J. Delgado aboard on a cloudy but mild Friday morning at the track. Co-owner and bloodstock agent Ramiro Restrepo stated the chestnut colt was “thriving” with good energy levels after his latest training session since winning the 149th Derby, paving the way for the horse to enter the Triple Crown’s second jewel at Pimlico in Baltimore. “He’s had a magnificent week of training,” Restrepo said with co-owner Chase […]

Martinez’s 3-run shot lifts Dodgers over Padres 4-2, win 4th in row

Just off the injured list, J.D. Martinez made his presence felt with a big blast. He hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the first inning, Julio Urías tossed seven strong innings and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 4-2 on Saturday for their fourth consecutive victory. The NL West leaders earned their fifth consecutive series win and have won 17 of their last 20 at Dodger Stadium. Their 14-6 home record is tops in the division. The Dodgers stretched their lead to six games over the third-place Padres. “We got a chance to go for the jugular tomorrow and that’s our intent,” Dodgers manager Dave […]

Knicks push Heat to Game 6 behind Jalen Brunson’s 38-point gem

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau beamed with pride as he described Jalen Brunson’s 38-point, nine-rebound, seven-assist performance in a must-win 112-103 victory over the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Wednesday night. As eye-popping as the numbers were for the guard who has quickly become one of Thibodeau’s favorite players in his first season with the Knicks, the stat that really made Thibodeau gush was the 48 in the minutes column. Not only did Brunson lead his team offensively, he played every second of the game to make sure the Knicks forced a Game 6 Friday night in Miami. “What can you say […]

Yankees’ Luis Severino eager to start minor league rehab

New York Yankees right-hander Luis Severino said it was “unnecessary” that the team decided to have him pitch in a controlled minor league intrasquad game on Friday and not in a game with Class A Tampa. Severino has been on the 15-day injured list since the begining of the regular season with a right lat strain. He had been originally scheduled to start Wednesday in a Florida State League game. It was first moved to Thursday before being canceled. “I think it was unnecessary not throw in low-A, but I do whatever they tell me to do,” Severino stated on Sunday before the […]

Andy Murray overcomes Tommy Paul for first title since 2019

Andy Murray bounced back to defeat world No. 17 Tommy Paul 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday in the Aix-en-Provence Challenger Tour final, earning his first title at any level since 2019. The three-time major winner converted four of nine breakpoints to claim his first clay title since 2016, a boost for the 35-year-old who stated he hoped to play the French Open later this month despite suffering early exits from Madrid and Monaco. It was Murray’s third triumph over a top-20 player this year and the twice Olympic gold medalist is expected to climb from 52nd to 42nd in the rankings after Sunday’s […]

Devin Booker shrugs off historic efficiency as Suns even series

Phoenix Suns superstar Devin Booker doesn’t want to be bothered with digging too deep into the analysis of his historic hot streak. Booker kept his phenomenal playoff run by scoring 36 points, matching teammate Kevin Durant’s total, while going 14-of-18 from the field in Phoenix’s series-evening 129-124 win over the Denver Nuggets in Sunday night’s Game 4 at Footprint Center. “Man, I’m just trying to win,” Booker said. “I always say, and it’s something that I’ll tell KD, like throw that efficiency s— out the window. I don’t care about that. Just keep going, keep attacking, keep being aggressive.” But Booker’s efficiency has been astounding throughout the playoffs […]

Mage wins Kentucky Derby overshadowed by 7 horse deaths at Churchill Downs

After seven deaths raised questions about the future of horse racing, Mage earned a surprising Kentucky Derby triumph on Saturday, capping a nerve-rattling day that included two more fatalities ahead of the 149th edition of the world’s most famous race. Mage, a 15-1 shot, had only one victory in his career, giving little indication that he could triumph versus 17 rivals in a race that is not kind to the inexperienced. Still, he made a gutsy stretch run, overtaking Two Phil’s to his inside and winning by a length. Mage, who didn’t race as a two-year-old, ran 1 1/4 miles […]

Astros’ Jose Altuve resumes baseball activities, return not set

Jose Altuve restarted some baseball activities this week, but there still isn’t a timetable for when Houston’s star second baseman will return to the team. Altuve fractured his right thumb in the World Baseball Classic and had surgery to repair the injury March 22. After his surgery, Astros general manager Dana Brown stated he would be out at least eight weeks. It has been six weeks so far, and while Altuve was cleared to return to baseball activities this week — including throwing, running and fielding — he hasn’t been cleared to swing. “I think right now it’s hard to tell,” […]

Raducanu ruled out of French Open, Wimbledon due to wrist, ankle surgery

Former U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu stated on Wednesday she will miss this year’s French Open and Wimbledon Championships after undergoing surgery on her wrists and ankle. The Brit said she will be out for “the next few months” as she recovers from recurring bone injures. “It is safe to say the last 10 months have been difficult as I dealt with a recurring injury to a bone of both hands,” Raducanu said on Twitter. “I’m having a minor procedure done on both hands to resolve the issues. I’m disappointed to share that I will be out for the next few months […]
