Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán throws 1st perfect game since 2012. It’s the 24th in MLB history

Since arriving in the big leagues six years ago, Domingo Germán has been anything but perfect. Until now. The New York Yankees right-hander pitched the 24th perfect game in major league history Wednesday night, retiring every Oakland batter in an 11-0 triumph over the Athletics. It was the first perfect game since Seattle Mariners ace Félix Hernández threw one versus the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 15, 2012. There were three that season — but none since until Germán finished off the first no-hitter in the majors this year. He joined Don Larsen (1956), David Wells (1998) and David Cone (1999) as Yankees to pitch perfect […]

Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek get No. 1 seeds for Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz — not four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic — and Iga Swiatek were seeded No. 1 for Wimbledon on Wednesday, as expected, because the All England Club adhered to the ATP and WTA rankings. Alcaraz overtook Djokovic atop the men’s standings on Monday. Djokovic has not played since collecting his men’s record 23rd Grand Slam title at the French Open on June 11 and slid to No. 2, while Alcaraz rose one spot after winning a grass-court tuneup tournament at Queen’s Club on Sunday. Djokovic has collected the championship at Wimbledon each of the past four times it was held — and seven times overall — but he did […]

Hawks deal John Collins to Jazz, open huge exception

In a deal that delivers the franchise dramatic financial flexibility, the Atlanta Hawks are trading forward John Collins to the Utah Jazz, sources told ESPN on Monday. The Hawks are getting forward Rudy Gay and a future second-round pick for Collins, who is owed $78 million over the next three seasons, sources said. The swap creates a $25.3 million trade exception for the Hawks — the largest in the NBA. Atlanta has a year to potentially use the exception to take on a player’s contract. The trade cannot become official until July 6. The deal to get Collins, 25, brings the Jazz a versatile forward to play […]

Timberwolves, center Naz Reid agree on 3-year, $42M deal

Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid has agreed on a new three-year, $42 million contract that includes a player option, his agents, Sean Kennedy and Jeff Schwartz of Excel Sports Management, told ESPN on Sunday. The deal keeps Reid out of free agency and secures him to the franchise where he arrived as an undrafted one-and-done player and developed into an indispensable frontline performer. The player option for the 2025-26 season gives Reid an opportunity to get another new contract in two years. Reid had his best season — 11.5 points and 4.9 rebounds in 18 minutes per game — before a season-ending wrist […]

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge has torn ligament in toe

New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge said Saturday he has a torn ligament in his right big toe and is experiencing pain when he walks. When the Yankees placed Judge on the injured list June 6, the team said he was dealing with a contusion and a sprained ligament in his right big toe. There remains no timetable for the return of the reigning American League MVP. “I’ve got to knock out the rehab stuff,” Judge said. “I’ve had different injuries over the years where it’s going to take a while. It’s not going to be perfect here in a couple of weeks. […]

Giants extend winning streak to 10, longest since 2004, with 4-2 victory over Padres

Sean Hjelle pitched four shutout innings of relief to help the San Francisco Giants extend their winning streak to 10 matches, defeating Yu Darvish and the San Diego Padres 4-2 on Wednesday night. Joc Pederson and Mike Yastrzemski added RBI singles, and the Giants turned four double plays to keep their longest win streak since 2004 intact. San Francisco also benefited from an overturned call at home plate in the fifth. Blake Sabol of the Giants appeared to be thrown out sliding into home by a strong throw from Fernando Tatis Jr. on Pederson’s two-out single to right. Sabol was initially ruled out but the call was challenged by San Francisco […]

Carlos Alcaraz tops Arthur Rinderknech in Queen’s Club opener

Carlos Alcaraz came from a set down Tuesday to defeat lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech in the top-seeded player’s first match at the grass-court Queen’s Club Championships. Alcaraz won 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3) versus the No. 83-ranked Rinderknech, a French player who only found out he was playing following the withdrawal of Arthur Fils a couple of hours before the match. Alcaraz faced difficulties in dealing with Rinderknech’s big serve and net coverage in what was the No. 2-ranked Spaniard’s seventh career match on grass, and first outside Wimbledon. Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green is declining his $27.6 million player option and will enter unrestricted free agency, Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski on Monday. “We will continue to talk to Golden State and explore all options,” Paul told ESPN. It was expected Green would opt out; now he can talk with the Warriors as well as explore sign-and-trades and free agency. Red Sox win 4-1, 6-2 to sweep Yankees in doubleheader and series

It’s too bad baseball went away from the unbalanced schedules, because the Boston Red Sox could really use a bunch more games versus the New York Yankees. The Red Sox defeated their AL East archrivals 4-1 on Sunday night, completing a doubleheader and series sweep that brought them just two games behind their longtime nemeses in the division. Boston won the series opener 15-5, and then took Sunday’s day game 6-2 in a makeup of Saturday’s rainout. “We like playing them. They like playing against us,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said. “It’s fun playing against them. Regardless of where we are in […]
