Bryce Harper (elbow) to report to Phillies camp Wednesday

Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper says he will report to spring training Wednesday as he continues recovering from elbow surgery and then determine when he can return full time. The two-time National League MVP was injured in April and last played right field April 16 in Miami. He underwent reconstructive right elbow surgery in November, causing him to miss the beginning of spring training. The 30-year-old will have some catching up to do when he arrives in Clearwater, Florida. His teammates have been adjusting to new pitch clock rules, part of Major League Baseball’s efforts to speed up the game. Looking for the […]

76ers rally to win 133-130, snap Bucks’ 16-game streak

Nothing could faze the Philadelphia 76ers. Not the loss of two starters. Not an 18-point deficit late in the third quarter. Not even the fact they were facing the NBA’s hottest team on the road. Joel Embiid made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 41.4 seconds left and the 76ers rallied to defeat Milwaukee 133-130 on Saturday night, snapping the Bucks’ 16-game winning streak. “You find something that works and you try to stick with it,” said James Harden, who had 38 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. “We found something late, in that fourth quarter, and we just stuck with it. We got some […]

Kevin Durant, back from injury, scores 23 in winning Suns debut

It was here during All-Star Weekend 2019 that Kevin Durant solidified his decision to partner with Kyrie Irving when both became free agents the following summer. Four years later, a new partnership was unveiled in the same arena, this one with hope for a better outcome. Playing for the first time as a member of the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night, Durant showed early signs of the potentially devastating one-two punch he can form with Devin Booker in a 105-91 win to snap the Charlotte Hornets’ five-game win streak. Durant scored 23 points in 27 minutes, his jumper looking rust-free after being out since Jan. 8 while recovering from a right […]

Tatis says shoulder, wrist ‘100%’ in first game since ’21

Fernando Tatis Jr. on Tuesday played his first game for the San Diego Padres in nearly 17 months. Tatis went 0-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base and scored a run in a 7-5 victory over the San Francisco Giants. He was the designated hitter in his first game since the 2021 regular-season finale. “I saw that it was 500 or something days since I was out there,” Tatis said. “Since the beginning of spring I thought about this.” Tatis missed all of last season. He was about to come back from wrist surgery when he was suspended on Aug. 12 for […]

Dodgers’ Gavin Lux to miss 2023 season with torn right ACL

Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Gavin Lux will miss the 2023 season with a torn ACL in his right knee. Manager Dave Roberts stated Tuesday that Lux is “obviously crushed” and that the injury is “a huge blow” to the Dodgers, who were anticipating that the former top prospect would be their starting shortstop this season. Roberts told reporters that Lux also suffered damage to his LCL and will undergo surgery March 7. Veteran Miguel Rojas is expected to handle the bulk of the playing time at shortstop, according to Roberts, who also mentioned Chris Taylor as a potential candidate at the position. Rojas said earlier Tuesday that […]

Novak Djokovic breaks Steffi Graf’s record for most weeks as world No. 1

Novak Djokovic is atop the men’s tennis rankings for the 378th week, breaking Steffi Graf’s record for most weeks as world No. 1. “It’s surreal to be that many weeks No. 1, to match Graf — one of the all-time greats,” Djokovic stated Sunday. “Just being amongst these legendary names is flattering. I’m proud of it.” Djokovic has 6,980 points in the ATP rankings, 200 ahead of second-ranked Carlos Alcaraz. The 22-time Grand Slam champion returned to the top spot last month after winning the Australian Open. Graf, also a 22-time major champion, was No. 1 in the women’s rankings for 377 weeks before […]

LeBron James to monitor right foot after injury against Mavs

LeBron James sustained a right foot injury late in the third quarter in Sunday’s 111-108 win versus the Dallas Mavericks but was able to finish out the game and help the Los Angeles Lakers pull off the biggest comeback victory in the NBA this season. “It’s been better,” James stated when asked about his foot afterward. “That’s for sure. But I definitely wasn’t going to go to the locker room and not finish the game out tonight. Just understood the importance of the game, and then with the momentum that we had, I felt like we could still win after being down. “We’ll monitor it the next […]

Bulls’ Patrick Beverley wants to knock Lakers out of playoffs

New Bulls guard Patrick Beverley already has a pair of games circled on his calendar for his new team — and both are versus the Los Angeles Lakers, his former squad. While discussing his addition to the Bulls during “The Pat Bev Podcast” on Tuesday, Beverley made note that Chicago still has two games left against the Lakers, for whom he started 45 games this season. Those games could be critical in the push for the playoffs, and Beverley made his intentions for those matchups clear. “Knock them out the playoffs,” Beverley said on his podcast. The Lakers traded Beverley to the Orlando Magic ahead of the Feb. 9 trade deadline, […]

Carlos Beltran, back with Mets, thought ‘no chance’ he’d reunite with team

Carlos Beltran is back with the New York Mets — the same club that fired him just three years ago in the wake of his involvement in the Houston Astros’ cheating scandal. Beltran, set to initiate his new role as a special assistant to Mets general manager Billy Eppler, was asked Wednesday if he ever thought he would work for the franchise again. “No chance,” Beltran responded. “That’s how the world goes around.” Beltran, a nine-time All-Star who spent parts of seven seasons as a standout center fielder for the Mets, spent last season as an analyst for the YES Network but said […]

Bulls rule guard Lonzo Ball (knee) out remainder of season

Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball will miss the remainder of the 2022-23 season, the team revealed Tuesday morning, as Ball continues to experience discomfort during basketball activities despite arthroscopic knee surgery before the season. Ball did not appear in a game this season and has not played since Jan. 14, 2022. He has undergone two surgeries on his left knee since then — in late January 2022 and again in September at the start of training camp — but despite some small improvements in recent months, he has still not been able to run, cut or jump without pain. “Despite making significant increases […]
