England combo with Bellingham will grow – Foden

After a shaky start to England’s European Championship campaign that had critics questioning his starting spot, Phil Foden has insisted his partnership with Jude Bellingham will only flourish. Foden was a headliner in Premier League last season, scoring 27 goals for Manchester City across all competitions to win the Premier League Footballer of the Year award. But lining up on the left of a front three in England’s 1-0 win over Serbia, with Bellingham occupying the central No. 10 position in which Foden has thrived with City, he drifted out of the game. “Jude’s obviously an exceptional talent,” Foden said in a Football Association video. “He’s a leader now, I think he’s turning […]

Golfers now have additional 15 minutes to correct scorecards

The temptation would be to refer to a change in the scorecard procedure as the “Jordan Rule,” only because Jordan Spieth was the most recent example. Players now have an additional 15 minutes to correct their scorecard before it is deemed to have been returned. Players were informed at the U.S. Open of the change. The USGA adopted the amended definition of when a card is “returned” at the U.S. Women’s Open two weeks earlier. It now goes into effect on most major tours this week. The PGA Tour stated the goal was “minimizing penalties or disqualifications related to scorecard errors.” Looking […]

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole set for season debut Wednesday vs. Orioles

The wait is over: Gerrit Cole will make his season debut for the New York Yankees versus the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner, on the injured list to start the season with nerve irritation and edema in his right elbow, will take the mound at Yankee Stadium after three rehab starts between Double-A and Triple-A. Cole was dominant in his last outing Friday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, giving up one unearned run on two hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks over 4⅓ innings. In all, Cole permitted two runs (one earned) with 19 strikeouts to zero walks across 12⅓ […]

Slovakia upset Belgium as VAR denies Lukaku twice

Ivan Schranz scored Slovakia’s quickest goal at a major tournament to take his side to a gritty upset 1-0 triumph over wasteful Belgium in European Championship Group E on Monday. It was Belgium’s first loss in 16 matches under coach Domenico Tedesco and a flashback to their disastrous 2022 World Cup campaign, although they did have two goals ruled out by VAR. Both were from the boot of Romelu Lukaku, the first for offside and the second a handball in the buildup on a hugely frustrating day for the Roma striker in which he also missed several clear-cut chances. After the match in Frankfurt, Germany, […]

Kyrie Irving aims to silence Celtics crowd, ‘self-doubt’ in Game 5

With his Dallas Mavericks attempting to avoid elimination in the NBA Finals, Kyrie Irving feels the pressure to perform in a road arena that presents uniquely challenging circumstances for him. After Sunday’s practice in preparation for Game 5 on Monday, Irving discussed the villain treatment he has received at TD Garden since his decision to leave the Boston Celtics in free agency five years ago. Irving struggled in the Mavs’ two road losses to open these Finals, averaging 14.0 points on 35.1% shooting, providing plenty of ammunition for a fan base that considers him to be a public enemy. “I mean, let’s just call it what […]

David Benavidez cruises by Oleksandr Gvozdyk, still wants Canelo

David Benavidez looked relatively at home in his first appearance at light heavyweight, cruising to a unanimous decision over Oleksandr Gvozdyk at the MGM Grand on Saturday night. Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) moved up to 175 pounds for the first time after his repeated efforts to entice undisputed super middleweight champ Canelo Alvarez into a fight fell short. He beat Gvozdyk (20-2, 16 KOs) comfortably, with the judges favoring Benavidez 119-109, 117-111 and 116-112, and claimed a WBC interim world title in the victory. “I think it’s a 7 out of 10, to be honest,” Benavidez stated when asked to […]
