Sanchez to have season ending surgery

The Astros acquired Aaron Sanchez from the Jays at the trade deadline hoping to bolster the back end of their rotation. He did briefly, tossing 11 innings of one-run ball in his first two starts. he was lit up for six runs in his August 15 start, however, and left his August 20 start after two and a third innings of three-run ball. He has not pitched since, with the team originally calling the problem a sore pectoral muscle.

The team had expected him to return this season, but general manager Jeff Luhnow said Thursday morning that he would have the unspecified procedure on his right shoulder next week and wouldn’t return this year.

The Astros have yet to divulge what the rehab process or anticipated timeline looks like other than the injury is season-ending. This 27-year old had battled chronic blister and finger issues for the better part of two seasons with the Blue Jays leading up to his trade.

The of-injured Sanchez would come hurling back down to earth in his final two starts surrendering nine runs over 7.2 innings and landing on the injured list.

Sanchez will finish the disastrous campaign with a 5-14 record including an inflated 5.89 earned run average in 27 starts between the Blue Jays and Astros.

The Jays acquired outfielder Derek Fisher in return for Sanchez, Joe Biagini, and prospect Cal Stevenson. Fisher has shown signs of life but still struggles to make consistent contact, he is hitting .185 with five homers in 26 games since the trade. Not quite a stat line that bodes well for next season.

Sanchez is arbitration-eligible once again this offseason after earning $3.9 million in 2019. One would have to think there is a possibility he is non-tendered by his new club.
