Barcelona to meet with Xavi to replace Valverde

Representatives from Barcelona will reportedly meet with Xavi to discuss the chance of him becoming their next manager.

According to Catalan radio station RAC1, per AS, Eric Abidal, the club’s sporting director and Oscar Grau, the CEO, are meeting with the legendary midfielder turned coach in Doha.

The Barca legend is presently managing Al Sadd of the Qatar Stars League but will apparently be spoken to about his ‘thoughts and, perhaps, his willingness to make a professional change’.

It’s suggested that Xavi won’t be asked to replace Ernesto Valverde instantly, but instead take over next summer, ahead of the new season.

Barcelona were knocked out of the Spanish Super Cup by Atletico Madrid on Thursday night.

The club may be top of La Liga – level on points with second-placed Real Madrid – but many believe it’s time for a change in the dugout, with the Spaniard failing to get the best out of his players.  The midfielder spent 17 campaigns at Camp Nou, making 767 appearances.

He also won 15 major trophies, including eight La Liga titles, three Copa del Reys and four Champions Leagues.

Xavi has been in charge at Al Sadd since hanging up his boots in May and his record in Qatar could well be appealing to Barca’s board.

14 victories, two draws and 10 defeats have come from 26 matches. So far this season, the club are third in the league, on course to qualify for the AFC Champions League.

He may be in the infancy of his managerial career, but Barca could soon be turning to Xavi. Not only has he made a promising start to life as a coach, but he’d also be a real fan favourite at Camp Nou and could be the perfect man to lift the club’s current stars to the next level.
