Tampa Bay Rays star Blake Snell alleged he would not be playing this season for a reduced salary, particularly because the risk of getting coronavirus “is not worth it.”
Snell protested Major League Baseball’s 50-50 revenue split with players for a season shortened by coronavirus in a video posted on social media on Wednesday.
“You all have to understand, man, that I’m leaving – that I’m going to drop a salary, that’s not the case, because the risk goes through the roof,” said Snell when answering questions on his Twitch channel. “It’s a shorter season, less pay.
“No, I must have my money. I only play if I get mine, okay? And it’s just like that for me. Like, I’m sorry you think differently, but the risk is much higher and the amount of money I make is much lower. Why would I think of doing this? ”

The 50-50 revenue split is included in a plan accepted by the owners on Monday, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The MLBPA should reject this element of the proposal and reply that an agreement reached in March between the parties guaranteed players a proportional part of their wages.
Snell, who was expected to earn $ 7 million in 2020, said he “loves baseball to the death” but was unwilling to accept multiple cuts in salary.
The former Cy Young Award winner from the American League also told The Times that he would be willing to skip the 2020 campaign and said the owners’ proposal for an income split was “very frustrating because we have a lot more risk ”.
Snell, 27, is entering the second year of a $ 50 million, five-year deal with the Rays.
The MLB met with union officials on Tuesday to initiate presenting its proposal, but the discussion did not concern compensation for players or other economic components, sources close to the meeting told ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.
