Red Sox trade Alex Verdugo to Yankees for three pitchers

The Yankees acquired outfielder Alex Verdugo from the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night, with New York turning to the 27-year-old to improve its offense in just the eighth trade between the rivals since the start of the Divisional Era in 1969. The Red Sox received right-handers Richard Fitts, Greg Weissert and Nicholas Judice in the deal. Verdugo spent the last four seasons in Boston after joining the Red Sox as the main return in the trade that sent star outfielder Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Verdugo, who is arranged to make around $9 million in his final season of arbitration, hit .264/.324/.421 with 13 home runs and 54 RBIs […]

Ryan Garcia accuses Golden Boy promoters of ‘backing’ opponent

Junior welterweight contender Ryan Garcia claimed at Thursday’s news conference that Hall of Fame fighters Oscar De La Hoya and Bernard Hopkins, his promoters at Golden Boy, are “backing” his adversary, Oscar Duarte, to defeat him Saturday in Houston. Duarte (26-1-1, 21 KOs) is also promoted by Golden Boy, but it’s Garcia who is the star fighter and -425 favorite to win the fight, per ESPN BET. Garcia (23-1, 19 KOs) is coming off a seventh-round TKO defeat to Gervonta Davis in April in the biggest commercial event in boxing in years. “One thing that’s been on my heart is the statements […]

Luis Severino goes from Yankees to Mets with $13M deal

Right-hander Luis Severino and the New York Mets on Wednesday agreed to a one-year, $13 million contract, sources told ESPN, sending the longtime Yankee to a Mets team that plans to spend its winter upgrading a depleted rotation. Severino, 29, had spent all of his eight-year career with the Yankees, including a rough 2023 in which he posted a 6.65 ERA over 89⅓ innings. Still, the free agent market has set the price of veteran starting pitchers at $10 million-plus a year — and Severino’s past success bought him slightly more. Over his first seven seasons with the Yankees, Severino was highly effective when healthy. He […]

Right-hander Kenta Maeda and the Tigers agreed Sunday on a two-year, $24 million contract, lengthening Detroit’s rotation as it hopes to improve on a 78-84 finish in the winnable American League Central. Maeda, who will be 36 two weeks into the season, joins a Tigers team that went 39-34 in the second half and had a positive run differential, matching their win total in 89 first-half games. Warriors’ Chris Paul tossed by Scott Foster after 2 technicals

Wednesday night’s game between the Warriors and Suns added another incident to the long conflict between Golden State’s Chris Paul and referee Scott Foster when Paul was ejected after Foster slapped him with two quick technical fouls. It was Paul’s seventh career ejection. “It’s personal,” Paul said. “We had a situation some years ago and it’s personal. The league knows. Everybody knows. There was a meeting and all of that. … I’m OK with a ref saying whatever they’re saying, but don’t use a tech to get your point across.” With 23 seconds left in the second quarter, Phoenix forward Kevin Durant drew a foul on Paul, who […]
