49ers rookie Bosa exits practice, getting MRI

Offensive linemen haven’t had much luck slowing Nick Bosa in training camp, but another injury did Wednesday. The 49ers’ rookie edge rusher — the No. 2 pick — had an MRI on his ankle after he was caught up in a pile of several players on a running play during practice. Bosa remained on the field for several minutes before he walked off slowly with two trainers. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh didn’t have definitive news on Bosa’s injury when he spoke shortly after practice, but he indicated it wasn’t serious. The 49ers did not provide an update after Bosa had […]

Jaguars lose another LB; Onwualu out for season

The Jacksonville Jaguars learned Tuesday that linebacker James Onwualu will be out for the season after he suffered a non-contact knee injury on Monday. Onwualu will miss the season leaving the team pretty thin at that position as the preseason begins on Thursday. Coach Doug Marrone called the injury that Onwualu suffered on Monday during joint practices with the Baltimore Ravens significant, but declined to elaborate on its exact nature. Onwualu was listed as the co-starter with Leon Jacobs at strongside linebacker on the team’s first unofficial depth chart. “It’s something that was a non-contact injury for the guys that have seen it and […]

Cowboys waive TE Gathers

The Dallas Cowboys are waiving tight end Rico Gathers, ending three years of steady progress with the club for the former Baylor basketball player who chose to pursue pro football over a shot at the NBA. The 25-year-old Gathers’ status on the roster became more tenuous when 11-time Pro Bowler Jason Witten came out of retirement after a year in broadcasting. Gathers also missed time at training camp with an ankle injury before Monday’s decision. Gathers hadn’t played football in a decade when he decided after four years in the Baylor basketball program that he would make himself eligible for […]

Yankees CF Hicks latest to hit IL

This time it’s Aaron Hicks. An MRI taken Sunday revealed Hicks has a right flexor strain. The 29-year-old centerfielder will be shut down from throwing for the next 7-10 days. There is no exact timetable for his return. Flexor strains can be a precursor to Tommy John surgery — pitchers James Kaprielian and Jordan Montgomery are recent Yankee examples of this progression — but Yankees manager Aaron Boone believes that won’t be required in Hicks’ case. “We were fearing the worst,” Boone said. “The fact the ligament’s intact is a good thing.” Hicks, who missed the first 40 games of the 2019 […]

Jaguars rookie LB Williams out 4-6 weeks

Jacksonville Jaguars rookie linebacker Quincy Williams, a third-round draft pick who showed enough over the last three months to lock down a starting spot, will miss 4-to-6 weeks because of a torn meniscus in his right knee. The older brother of New York Jets rookie Quinnen Williams tweaked his knee during drills Thursday and left practice early. The team says he will have arthroscopic surgery in the coming days. He still has an outside shot at returning in time for the Sept. 8 season opener against Kansas City. “Our expectation is that he’ll be ready for the first game,” coach […]

Seattle’s Collier with high ankle sprain

The Seattle Seahawks have suffered their first significant injury of training camp. Late in practice, first-round pick L.J. Collier went down with a right leg injury after getting tangled with an offensive lineman during a move-the-ball team period. Adam Schefter has now reported that Collier suffered a high-ankle sprain. The injury will likely keep him out the entire preseason, if not longer. Collier was clearly in a lot of pain right after the play. He ended up hobbling off under his own power but couldn’t put much weight on his right leg. The trainers worked on him off to the side for a few minutes […]

Phillies acquire Vargas from Mets

The Phillies announced the acquisition of pitcher Jason Vargas and some cash from the Mets. The Mets will receive minor league catcher Austin Bossart in return for Vargas, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post. To make room for Vargas on the 40-man roster, the Phillies designated Yacksel Rios for assignment. The Phillies are also getting money from the Mets in the deal, according to NBC Sports Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury. Vargas, 36, put up a solid 4.01 ERA with 81 strikeouts and 39 walks across 94 1/3 innings for the Mets this season. The lefty is owed the remainder of his $8 million salary and has an $8 million club […]

Scherzer doubtful to make next start vs. Braves

Max Scherzer’s status to make his next start Tuesday against the Braves was still up in the air Sunday morning, according to Nationals manager Dave Martinez. Scherzer was scheduled for a cardio day prior to the Nats’ series finale against the Dodgers, but he still had not picked up a baseball two days after he received a stem cell shot to relieve a mild strain of the rhomboid muscle in his upper back. Scherzer, who turned 35 Saturday, has been shut down since Friday after he woke up feeling back pain following his return from the injured list the previous […]

Rangers’ Gallo to miss 4 weeks after wrist surgery

Texas Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo has been placed on the 10-day injured list after undergoing surgery to remove a fractured hook of hamate bone in his right wrist Thursday. Texas executive vice president of communications John Blake noted Gallo is expected to miss a minimum of four weeks. Gallo had played through pain in the wrist all month. He departed the Rangers’ Tuesday road game against the Seattle Mariners after batting in the eighth inning due to soreness. X-rays on Tuesday night and an MRI exam on Wednesday prompted the Rangers to send Gallo home for the surgical procedure. “Joey plays through a lot of nagging […]
