Masai Ujiri to stay in Toronto

Despite some serious outside interest, Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri plans to remain in Toronto after constructing the first title team in Raptors history last season.  Earlier this month, it was reported that the Washington Wizards were prepared to offer Ujiri a massive deal worth nearly $10 million annually with an opportunity for ownership equity. “I love it here,” Ujiri said of Toronto, via ESPN. “My family loves it here. My wife loves it here, which is very important. My kids are Canadians. You want to win more. … In my mind, I’m here.”   Ujiri, 48, has two years remaining on his current […]

Rockies’ Gonzalez to face Giants after 3-year absence

Colorado Rockies right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez is scheduled to make his return from almost a three-year major league absence when he takes on Madison Bumgarner and the host San Francisco Giants in the second game of a three-game series Tuesday night. The Rockies got shutout pitching from righty Jon Gray and three relievers to win the series opener 2-0 on Monday night, spoiling a five-inning, 11-strikeout effort by Giants left-hander Drew Pomeranz. Gonzalez, 27, blew out the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching arm in spring training with the Rangers in 2017 after he went 4-8 with a 4.54 ERA for Texas over the previous two seasons. […]

Dodgers’ Hill hopes to return this year

An MRI exam Thursday on Dodgers lefthander Rich Hill’s arm revealed a strained flexor tendon near his elbow, an injury that he said will prevent him from throwing for nearly a month and likely will keep him on the injured list at least into August. Hill underwent the MRI the day after leaving his start Wednesday night against the Giants after only one inning, an early departure that the Dodgers initially attributed to “left forearm tightness” then later clarified to “discomfort,” not “tightness.” The Dodgers placed Hill on the 10-day injured list Thursday and recalled right-handed pitchers JT Chargois and […]

Bucks trading Snell to Pistons for Leuer

The Detroit Pistons have acquired Tony Snell and the 30th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks in exchange for forward Jon Leuer, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Wednesday night. As Wojnarowski and ESPN colleague Zach Lowe noted, Detroit was willing to absorb salary to gain an extra first-round pick in Thursday’s draft Snell has been a reliable part of the Bucks rotation for the past three years, averaging 7.2 points per game while shooting 40.3 percent from deep. His playing time declined in 2018-19 to 17.6 minutes per game—his fewest since his rookie season—but he still made 74 appearances and […]

Rays’ Diaz on 10-day IL with Hamstring injury

The Rays have placed third baseman Yandy Diaz on the 10-day injured list, Juan Toribio of MLB.com tweets. Infielder Daniel Robertson will come up to take the roster opening. Diaz has been dealing with hamstring tightness that hasn’t resolved quite as rapidly as had been hoped. The club obviously felt it could no longer afford to carry an unavailable player. There’s little reason at present to think that Diaz will be sidelined for more than the minimum, though it’ll all depend upon how the muscle heals up. The Rays will hope for a swift return for the 27-year-old, who has been everything they hoped for […]

Frazier sent to minors by Yankees

It was inevitable that someone would lose out on a lot of at-bats when the New York Yankees acquired the AL home run leader, Edwin Encarnación, on Saturday. Unfortunately, the big loser appears to be Clint Frazier. Despite placing fourth on the team with 11 home runs and slashing .285/.333/.522, Frazier was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the team announced Sunday. The move certainly caught Frazier by surprise. “This is the reality of things,” Frazier said to reporters. “Guess I’m facing reality right now. It’s a tough pill to swallow. It’s never fun, especially with how much I’ve felt like I’ve contributed to […]

Phillies acquire infielder Miller from Yankees

The Phillies acquired infielder Brad miller from the Yankees on Thursday in exchange for cash considerations, MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki reports. Miller will join the Phillies for the start of their series against the Braves in Atlanta on Friday. Miller, 29, is now with his fourth organization this year. He signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers in late February. He opted out near the end of spring training, then signed a one-year deal with the Indians days later. Though he hit well with the Indians, he was designated for assignment in mid-April, which shortly thereafter allowed the Yankees to ink him to a minor league deal. […]

Kyrie splits with agent

Irving parted ways with longtime agent Jeff Wechsler on Wednesday, clearing the way for him to ultimately work with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation prior to the start of NBA free agency on June 30, sources said. Irving, a six-time All-Star, will become an unrestricted free agent, and league sources say he remains intensely interested in the Brooklyn Nets. The New York Knicks are expected to remain competitive for Irving, too, sources told ESPN. The Nets and Knicks have both hoped to sign Irving and Kevin Durant together into max salary slots. Durant’s free agency has been complicated by a ruptured right Achilles tendon that is expected to keep […]

Luck to miss Colts minicamp with strained calf

The Indianapolis Colts will gladly play it safe with Andrew Luck. They’d rather he be healthy for training camp anyway. Just minutes after coach Frank Reich announced Tuesday that his starting quarterback would sit out this week’s three-day minicamp — the final portion of Indy’s offseason workouts — Luck promised he would return to practice when the Colts report to camp in late July. “It’s OK, it’s not good enough to practice this week, which I’m bummed about,” Luck said, describing the injury. “But I think we’re on a very, very good page and I’ll be ready for training camp.” […]
