No. 1-ranked Djokovic showed signs of rustiness with a couple of unforced errors in the opening game, but he put pressure on his Hungarian opponent with the quality of his service returns, breaking him twice in the first set. Houston Astros to start Luis Garcia on short rest in Game 6 of World Series

The Astros are turning to rookie Luis Garcia, pitching on short rest, to stave off elimination from the Atlanta Braves in Game 6 of the World Series on Tuesday. Manager Dusty Baker stated it’s Garcia’s turn to throw, and that he can always count on a rested bullpen if things go poorly for the 24-year-old. “We think that he’s the best for the job,” Baker said Monday afternoon. “We realize that he has a short leash, but then everybody out there has a short leash and operating on low rest or not full rest.” Baker reeled off all his relievers who are available on Tuesday, […]

Padres hire Ruben Niebla as pitching coach before landing manager

San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller has hired a pitching coach before landing a manager. Preller hired Ruben Niebla away from Cleveland on Wednesday, saying a number of factors made the Guardians’ assistant pitching coach and Southern California native too good to pass up even as San Diego’s managerial search stretched to three weeks. Niebla, 49, has been Cleveland’s assistant pitching coach for the last two campaigns. Before that, he spent seven seasons as the Guardians’ minor league pitching coordinator. Overall, he spent 21 seasons in Cleveland’s organization. He is widely credited with helping develop starters such as Shane Bieber, former […]
