New York Mets GM says his team had an understanding with the New York Yankees on hiring of Eric Chavez as hitting coach

Mets general manager Billy Eppler stated he spoke to Yankees general manager Brian Cashman well before hiring away Eric Chávez as the team’s hitting coach and that both sides had an understanding that Chávez might end up in Queens. Chávez, 44, was hired by the Yankees in November as one of two assistants to new hitting coach Dillon Lawson — and projected to take on a role beyond his title. A few weeks later, the Mets hired the 17-year big leaguer to be their primary hitting coach. Eppler said Monday that he was in contact with Cashman before the Yankees hired Chávez, and […]

MLB Players Association to make counteroffer to league in Monday meeting

The Major League Baseball Players Association plans to make an in-person labor proposal to the league on Monday, sources told ESPN, countering MLB’s offer last week that did little to loosen the gridlock that has gripped the sport after the league locked out the players Dec. 2. Should the players’ offer do little to advance the negotiations that thus far haven’t yielded any substantive progress, the scheduled start to spring training in mid-February will grow that much unlikelier. And the longer discussions on a new collective-bargaining agreement last, the more they jeopardize Opening Day on March 31. The gap between […]

Free-agent shortstop Carlos Correa hires Scott Boras to represent him

Star free-agent shortstop Carlos Correa has hired agent Scott Boras, Correa told ESPN over the phone Tuesday night. On the 47th day of Major League Baseball’s lockout, with transactions frozen and Correa still without a team, the 27-year-old player joined Boras, the veteran agent who before the work stoppage negotiated $630 million in deals for Corey Seager, Marcus Semien and Max Scherzer. Correa, who in seven campaigns with the Houston Astros made two All-Star teams and won the 2017 World Series, entered this winter on the top of most free-agent boards. While multiple teams expressed interest in Correa, Seager signed the pre-lockout megadeal with the Texas Rangers for $325 million […]

Los Angeles Dodgers promote Brandon Gomes to general manager

Brandon Gomes, a former major league pitcher just six years removed from his playing days, has been named general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, a position left vacant since Farhan Zaidi’s departure to the San Francisco Giants. Gomes, 37, has a long history with Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, who initially traded for Gomes when he served as GM of the Tampa Bay Rays in December 2010. Shortly after Gomes retired at the end of the 2016 season, Friedman — two years into his tenure with the Dodgers at that point — hired him as the organization’s pitching performance coordinator. Jon Lester announces retirement after 16 seasons, three World Series titles

Three-time World Series champion and 200-game winner Jon Lester is retiring after a 16-year career. Lester, 38, told ESPN that his body just isn’t up for the rigors of a major league season anymore. He made 30 or more starts 12 times during his career and 28 during his final season split between the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals. His résumé contains five All-Star appearances and a 2.51 postseason ERA. “It’s kind of run its course,” Lester said. “It’s getting harder for me physically. Emma Raducanu suffers crushing defeat by Elena Rybakina in Sydney opener

U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu was crushed 6-0, 6-1 by in-form ninth seed Elena Rybakina at the Sydney Tennis Classic on Tuesday. Great Britain’s Raducanu, playing her first match this season, was comprehensively outplayed in the opening set as her adversary took advantage of her unsteady serve, which included four double faults. Rybakina, runner-up to world No. 1 Ash Barty in the Adelaide International on Sunday, kept up the intensity in the second set and clinched the victory in just under an hour. Raducanu was consistently troubled by Rybakina’s deep returns, allowing the 19-year-old little time to settle and leading to a slew of […]
