Champion British jockey Oisin Murphy handed 3-month ban

The champion jockey of British horse racing was banned from riding for three months on Friday following a positive test for cocaine. The punishment was handed down by France Galop, four months after Oisin Murphy returned a positive test for metabolites of the drug in a test undertaken at Chantilly. Murphy, a 25-year-old jockey from Ireland, denied he had taken any drugs and requested a B sample. He evaded a six-month ban given to riders for similar cases after a disciplinary hearing was persuaded by Murphy’s testimony that the positive test arose unintentionally from what was described as “environmental contamination.” […]

Kevin Flanery retiring as president of Churchill Downs after 11 years

Churchill Downs says president Kevin Flanery will retire at the end of this year after 11 years in charge of the home of the Kentucky Derby. Flanery started as Churchill Downs Incorporated’s vice president of national public affairs in December 2005 before becoming the historic track’s 13th president in July 2009. He has overseen the expansion of suites and viewing areas and upgrades including the installation of permanent track lighting and construction of the Big Board video screen over the backstretch. Princess Secret (Khozan), winner of the Susan’s Girl S. and My Dear Girl S. for owner and trainer Daniel Pita, was denied entry into Friday’s GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies after testing positive for a banned substance. An Oct. 26 blood test administered by the Breeders’ Cup Out-Of-Competition program turned up the presence of Stanozolol, an anabolic steroid clearly prohibited by Breeders’ Cup under its conditions of entry. Shelley Brown wasn’t sure if she felt well enough to stay awake on Sunday night and watch her horse compete in one of Canada’s most prestigious derbies.
