Pedroza Splitting Time Between Ellis Park, Indiana Grand

Marcelino Pedroza’s hope still is to ride seven days a week this summer: Mondays-Thursdays at Indiana Grand in Shelbyvlle, Ind., where he has a 12-victory lead in the jockey standings with 42 victories and a meet-leading $1.12 million in purse earnings, and then Fridays-Sundays at Ellis Park in Henderson, Ky. While he’s found the Ellis opportunities limited so far, the jockey is making the most of them. With only five mounts spread over four days, Pedroza has two wins and a second. His victories contain Saturday’s fourth race for locally-based trainer Billy Stinson Jr. in Pedroza’s only mount of the […]

Mind Control Snaps Losing Streak With Win In Nerud Stakes At Belmont

Mind Control had not seen the inside of a winner’s circle since March 2020 when he obtained the Grade 3 Tom Fool Handicap at Aqueduct Racetrack in New York, N.Y. The 5-year-old horse had gotten close in his last eight starts, finishing second to Mischevious Alex in the Carter Handicap at Aqueduct back in April. Sunday, Mind Control dueled with favorite Firenze Fire throughout the seven furlongs of the Grade 2 John A. Nerud Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., never letting Firenze Fire get more than a half-length on him before battling back to win by a head […]

Ring Weekend Retired to Old Friends

Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement farm in Georgetown, Ky, has welcomed new retiree, Ring Weekend . Owned and campaigned by West Point Thoroughbreds and trained by Graham Motion, the grade 1-winning gelding retired from racing in 2018 and was initially sent to retrain for a second career with Olympic gold medalist Phillip Dutton, but a recent injury prevented his further progress. “‘Ring’ showed incredible promise as an Event prospect, so I was devastated when he sustained a career-limiting injury during his turnout,” stated Dutton. “I wish Ring Weekend all the best in his new prestigious retirement home,” Dutton added, “and thanks to […]

Letruska will run right back in Fleur de Lis

Somebody must’ve forgotten to tell trainer Fausto Gutierrez that top-level horses in America usually don’t wheel back in three weeks, at least not when the weather gets this warm. Not that anyone should mind. Gutierrez, the dominant trainer in his native Mexico, has confirmed that Letruska, the leader in the North American filly-mare division, will return from her romp in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps on the June 5 Belmont Stakes undercard to run Saturday in the Grade 2, $300,000 Fleur de Lis at Churchill Downs. The 5-year-old Super Saver mare is owned by her breeder, the St. George Stables […]

Mandaloun Rallies From Last to Take Pegasus

If you think nailing a Pick 6 is an arduous task, try predicting how racing luck is doled out. Take, for example, what happened June 13 in the $147,500 TVG.com Pegasus Stakes for 3-year-olds at Monmouth Park. Six weeks earlier, in the demolition derby known as the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), Juddmonte Farm’s Mandaloun faced 18 rivals and had a pretty smooth trip at 26-1 odds in finishing second—for now. So, fast forward to Sunday, where Mandaloun was a 3-10 favorite over just four rivals in the Pegasus. Even with such a miniscule field, shortly after the starting gates opened, […]

Hot Rod Charlie Full Of Energy After Gallant Belmont Try

Even though he set the blistering pace in Saturday’s Grade 1 Belmont Stakes presented by NYRA Bets and got into a heavyweight clash with Essential Quality down the lane before losing the 1 ½ mile “Test of the Champion” to that one by only 1 ½ lengths, Hot Rod Charlie was full of energy and enthusiasm the morning after at Belmont Park, Elmont, N.Y. “He looks awesome, just awesome,” stated trainer Doug O’Neill before jetting back to his Southern California base. “He ate up everything and licked his feed tub. We scoped him after the race, and he scoped clean. […]

Crazy Beautiful Finds Kentucky Oaks Redemption In Summertime Oaks At Santa Anita

Kentucky-based Crazy Beautiful made amends for a disappointing effort in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks as she rallied three-wide turning for home en route to a 1 ¾-length victory in Sunday’s G2, $200,000 Summertime Oaks at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif. Trained by Ken McPeek, ridden by Mike Smith and saddled today by locally based trainer Karen Headley, Crazy Beautiful got 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.85. Last after the first half mile, about three lengths off speedy Lady Aces, Smith saved ground at the rail around the far turn and permitted his filly to idle a bit as longshot Plum […]

Other Than Medina Spirit, Oaks, Derby Day Horses Clear

While the racing world awaits split sample testing and results for Medina Spirit , all of the other horses tested from this year’s Kentucky Oaks and Derby day cards at Churchill Downs have passed preliminary testing. According to experts, the fact that all other horses passed their post-race test reduces the likelihood that contamination factored in the post-race finding of would-be Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) winner Medina Spirit. That triumph is in question, pending testing of the split sample, as trainer Bob Baffert revealed May 9 that Medina Spirit tested positive for the corticosteroid betamethasone in the initial post-race test. Based on […]

Bob Baffert, Medina Spirit suspended from Belmont Stakes: ‘In the best interests’ of horse racing

The New York Racing Association stated on Monday that it’s suspending trainer Bob Baffert from entering or stalling any horses at its tracks. That means Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit won’t be permitted to run at the Belmont Stakes, the third leg of thoroughbred racing’s Triple Crown. The NYRA announced its decision as Derby host Churchill Downs awaits the results of a second drug test after Medina Spirit tested positive for banned steroid betamethasone. Baffert originally denied that he used betamethasone improperly on Medina Spirit, blaming “cancel culture” and floating a theory that the horse ate hay tainted by human urine instead. Baffert admitted days […]

Horse racing-Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit fails drug test

Trainer Bob Baffert, who won a record-setting seventh Kentucky Derby with Medina Spirit this month, on Sunday said the dark bay colt had failed a drug test. Baffert said a post-race sample provided by Medina Spirit had tested positive for 21 picograms of the anti-inflammatory drug betamethasone, over the legal limit in Kentucky racing. Medina Spirit, ridden by jockey John Velazquez, had secured a half-length triumph over Mandaloun in the 19-horse Kentucky Derby on May 1. Baffert’s camp were informed of the news by Kentucky officials on Saturday, but the 68-year-old denied giving the horse illegal substances and said the […]
