The World No. 1 defeated #NextGenATP Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday to win the Mutua Madrid Open, equaling Rafael Nadal’s record of 33 ATP Masters 1000 titles. It is also Djokovic’s 200th victory against a Top 10 opponent (200-90). “These are the best tournaments, biggest tournaments we have in our sport, in the ATP, of course alongside the Grand Slams,” Djokovic said on court after his win. “This is as important and as good as it gets.” Djokovic arrived in the Caja Magica having made just one quarter-final in three tournaments since lifting the trophy at the Australian Open. Kerr confirms KD out remainder of Rockets series

Kevin Durant is done for the rest of the Western Conference semifinals, and head coach Steve Kerr said the Golden State Warriors must grasp the task ahead: Replace the best player in the NBA. “He’s been the best player in the NBA in the playoffs. He’s been phenomenal,” Kerr said Thursday night, confirming Durant is several days or more from being able to play basketball. A return could potentially come in the Western Conference finals, but the Warriors, leading the Houston Rockets 3-2 in the semifinals entering Friday’s Game 6 at Houston, still need a win without Durant. “Well, we’ll […]

Bucks beat Celtics to advance to East Final

The Bucks are headed to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2001 after beating the Celtics 4-1 in the second round. Giannis Antetokounmpo paced Milwaukee with 20 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Kyrie Irving led Boston in scoring with 15 points in the final game of the season — now, eyes turn towards Irving’s impending free agency. After sweeping Detroit in the first round, top-seeded Milwaukee struggled in Game 1 against Boston and lost 112-90 in one of its worst offensive performances of the season. But Antetokounmpo led the way as the Bucks responded with four straight wins by a combined 65 […]

Patriots to sign veteran OT Veldheer

The New England Patriots are planing on signing offensive tackle Jared Veldheer, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. They two parties may not make the deal official until later this week. That may be because New England wants to keep Veldheer from counting against the compensatory pick formula for the 2020 NFL Draft. Signings made on May 8 or later will not come into play for the Patriots’ draft compensation for their 2019 free agent, which is likely to earn them two third-round picks. Pelissero adds Veldheer is expected to sign a one-year deal worth up to $6.5 million and […]

Bears trade for Raiders Kicker Pineiro

Having already collaborated on a trade that shook the NFL world before the 2018 season, the Bears and Raiders pulled off another swap on Monday. Oakland sent kicker Eddy Pineiro to Chicago in return for a conditional 2021 seventh-round draft pick, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported. While the latest Bears-Raiders trade is ions removed from the colossal Khalil Mack deal, it is evidence of the Bears searching high and low for a new kicker. Cody Parkey infamously missed a “double-doink” field goal attempt that was partially blocked to lose to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Wild Card Round. Since then, Parkey has been released, tryouts have been had, four kickers with no […]

Dodgers return home to face Braves

The Los Angeles Dodgers will return to the more predictable comforts of home Monday, which could pose a challenge for an Atlanta Braves team that feels it might have some of the answers it has been looking for early in the season. The Dodgers and Braves last met in the National League Division Series last October, won by the Dodgers in four games, and the teams will get together for the first time in 2019 on Monday night at Dodger Stadium. Los Angeles enters after a crushing 8-5 defeat at San Diego on Sunday, when pinch hitter Hunter Renfroe hit a game-ending grand slam. […]

Antetokounmpo, Irving ready as Bucks-Celtics hits Game 3

Irving and Antetokounmpo traded big games when the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks split decisions in Milwaukee to open their Eastern Conference semifinal playoff series. Now the scene shifts to Boston for Game 3 on Friday night, with the best-of-seven having become a best-of-five and the fourth-seeded Celtics holding the home-court advantage over the top-seeded Bucks. “This is what I signed up for,” Irving insisted to reporters at practice during the two days off between games. “This is what Boston traded for me for: being able to go back in the trenches, get ready for another battle. “You know, this […]

Indians RHP Kluber hit by liner, fractures forearm

Corey Kluber got hit hard again, and the last line drive really hurt. The struggling Cleveland Indians right-hander broke his right forearm when he was hit by a comebacker during a 4-2 loss to the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night. Kluber (2-3) was struck by Brian Anderson’s liner in the fifth inning. “It looked ugly,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. Kluber’s arm was placed in a cast, and he’ll be re-evaluated in Cleveland on Thursday. The Indians will have a better idea at that point of how long he might be out. “It stinks, you know?” teammate Roberto Perez said. “He’s our ace. We’re […]

Popovich expected to sign 3 year deal

San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is expected to sign a three-year deal once he formally commits to return to the sideline, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Wojnarowksi added the extension would keep Popovich as the highest-paid coach in the league. While a multi-year contract would give Popovich the ability to coach beyond 2019-20, Wojnarowski noted the 70-year-old coach would continue to go on a year-to-year basis. “I’m currently in negotiations and could very well end up with either the Portofino Flyers or the Positano Pirates (or the Spurs),” Popovich joked. “I think it’s like one-third Positano, one-third Portofino and one-third San Antonio. So, […]

Browns to add undrafted Scottish punter

The Browns are signing undrafted Scottish free agent punter Jamie Gillan from Arkansas-Pine Bluff, a person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press. The Browns brought Gillan in for a workout before the NFL draft. They plan to sign him later this week and have him in camp to compete with starting punter Britton Colquitt, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Monday because Gillan still must pass a physical before signing. Gillan caught Cleveland’s attention — and other teams’ as well — after averaging 43.4 yards per punt last season. He was born in England […]
