New York Mets acquire RHP Chris Bassitt from Oakland Athletics after All-Star season

All-Star right-hander Chris Bassitt, who made a remarkable recovery from a frightening line drive to the head last year, was traded by the Oakland Athletics to the New York Mets on Saturday for a pair of minor league pitchers. The Mets sent right-handers J.T. Ginn and Adam Oller to the A’s for Bassitt. Bassitt gives the Mets a much-needed starter for the middle of the rotation, seemingly a good fit behind aces Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer. The 33-year-old Bassitt came back to make two starts in late September, just more than a month after he took a 100 mph liner to the face on Aug. 17 in Chicago. The […]

Kyrie Irving’s season-high 50 points lead Brooklyn Nets past Charlotte Hornets to snap skid

Kyrie Irving’s 50-point outburst during Tuesday night’s 132-121 victory over the Charlotte Hornets was so impressive that Kevin Durant spent the first few moments of his postgame news conference clapping for his teammate at the podium. Durant called Irving’s performance a “master class” and said younger players should watch it to learn how he handled his business on the floor. “Everything he does is pure,” Durant said after the game. “It looked so easy tonight. I look up, he had 10 points and it felt like he only took two shots in the first quarter. And I told Seth [Curry], I’m like, ‘Damn, I didn’t know he […]

Major League Baseball cancels second week of season after discussions fail to produce CBA

Major League Baseball canceled the second week of the regular season Wednesday after days of discussion with the MLB Players Association failed to generate a new collective-bargaining agreement. The international draft, long part of negotiations but not until recently a central issue, scuttled talks Wednesday afternoon. A day earlier, the league had proposed tying an international draft that would cover amateurs from Latin America and Asia to the removal of direct draft-pick compensation, in which teams are penalized draft picks for signing top free agents. Players balked at the idea, rejected proposals from the league to address it and sent […]

Ben Simmons to be on Brooklyn Nets bench against 76ers in Philadelphia; playing debut in flux

While it remains to be seen when new Brooklyn Nets swingman Ben Simmons will be able to make his season debut as he continues to deal with a back injury, Nets coach Steve Nash stated Simmons will join up with his new team in Philadelphia on Wednesday and will sit on the bench with the team Thursday. Simmons, who was acquired from the 76ers last month along with Andre Drummond, Seth Curry and two future first-round picks in exchange for All-Star guard James Harden and Paul Millsap, is expected to be roundly booed Thursday after requesting a trade from the Sixers after last season, citing mental health concerns. Nash was quick with […]

New MLBPA proposal includes $5M reduction in pre-arbitration pool

The MLB Players Association gave a written collective bargaining agreement proposal to Major League Baseball on Sunday. It included a $5 million reduction to the union’s last offer in a pre-arbitration bonus pool, but it did not include any changes to its competitive balance tax proposal, according to sources familiar with the situation. The meeting in New York lasted 95 minutes with the union suggesting afterward that the two sides meet again Monday. Deputy commissioner Dan Halem and union chief negotiator Bruce Meyer met after Sunday’s meeting, but the league stated it will get back to the players about meeting […]

Woods took to Twitter on Wednesday to take an apparent jab at Mickelson. Rory McIlroy, Jordan Spieth, Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas will […]

MLB cancels first 2 regular-season series after MLBPA rejects league’s final proposal

Major League Baseball has canceled Opening Day, with commissioner Rob Manfred revealing Tuesday the sport will scrap regular-season games over a labor dispute for the first time in 27 years after acrimonious lockout talks collapsed in the hours before management’s deadline. Manfred stated he is canceling the first two series of the season that was set to start March 31, dropping the schedule from 162 games to likely 156, at most. Manfred said the league and union have not made plans for future negotiations and that players won’t be paid for missed games. “My deepest hope is we get an […]

Derek Jeter announced Monday that he has stepped down as CEO of the Miami Marlins, a decision that sent shockwaves through the industry on the day of Major League Baseball’s self-imposed deadline to conclude a new collective bargaining agreement and preserve the start of the regular season. In a statement sent through a news-release distributor rather than the Marlins, Jeter said “the vision for the future of the franchise is different than the one I signed up to lead. Now is the right time for me to step aside as a new season begins.” Jeter, the Hall of Fame shortstop who […]

Rafael Nadal defeats Cameron Norrie in Mexican Open final for third title in 2022

Rafael Nadal stated earlier in the week that he wasn’t aware of his career statistics. Now, he might want to have a look at them. The 35-year-old Spaniard defeated Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-4 on Saturday to win the Mexican Open and extend his career-best start for a season to 15-0 as he won his 91st ATP title.
