Cowboys WR Allen Hurns undergoes ankle surgery

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Allen Hurns suffered a gruesome, postseason-ending ankle injury during Saturday’s 24-22 playoff win over the Seattle Seahawks and has already undergone surgery for the injury.

Hurns told Jane Slater of NFL Network he is out of surgery and that he will be “good to go by the beginning of the season.” Adam Schefter of ESPN.com first reported the news of Hurns’ surgery.

“Hurns is one of the best teammates I’ve ever had and I think anybody would say this,” Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott said after the game, per the team’s website. “When you see a guy like that go down, it hurts. Just seeing how nasty that was, it hurts a lot.”

“I’m just glad we were able to go out there and get that win for him,” running back Ezekiel Elliott added. “Just hoping that he’s doing all right.” Hurns, 27, caught 20 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns in 16 regular-season games for the Cowboys. He had one catch for 14 yards against the Seahawks, though he suffered his injury in the first quarter after making that grab.

With Hurns out of the lineup, the Cowboys will have to rely on alternative options at wideout behind standout Amari Cooper, including Cole Beasley, Michael Gallup and perhaps even Tavon Austin. Tight end Blake Jarwin may also be asked to play a bigger role in the passing game. 

The Cowboys will move forward without Hurns in the lineup but his injury nonetheless weighed heavily on his teammates’ minds after the game. “It’s terrible, man,” Beasley said, per Todd Archer of ESPN.com. “You never want to see an injury like that to any of your brothers out there. It’s unfortunate. I feel for him, and I just hope he’s in good spirits. I’m sure he’s got a lot on his mind. It sucks, man. That’s never a good feeling.”
