INDIANAPOLIS 500

The Greatest Spectacle in Racing hits it’s 100th edition in 2016, and will close out the month that will also see the third edition of the Grand Prix of Indy, run around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s in-field road course.

The Indianapolis 500 is an automobile race held annually at Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, an enclave suburb of Indianapolis, Indiana. The event is held over Memorial Day (originally Decoration Day) weekend, which is typically the last weekend in May. It is contested as part of the Verizon IndyCar Series, the top level of American Championship Car racing, an open-wheel formula colloquially known as “Indy Car Racing“. The name of the race is often shortened to Indy 500.

The IndyCar series is back at the Brickyard – Indianapolis Motor Speedway – and will be racing today in their new tradition in the lead up to the legendary Indianapolis 500, the Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis. The race debuted in 2014 with Simon Pagenaud taking victory for Honda after a chaotic first lap crash between Carlos Munoz and a stalled Sebastian Saavedra.

The road-course is a 14-turn, 2.439-mile affair and is considered fast and flowing for a road event.

The Indianapolis 500 is one of the biggest motorsport events of the year, not just in the Verizon IndyCar Series, but worldwide, and has seen names like AJ Foyt, Rick Mears, Al Unser and Dario Franchitti take victory and etch themselves in motorsport folklore, with each of the previous 99 winners symbolised and immortalised on theBorg-Warner Trophy.

Last year’s event saw Team Penske’s Juan Pablo Montoya take his second Indy 500 triumph, fifteen years after his first, with team-mate Will Power taking second ahead of Chip Ganassi Racing’s Charlie Kimball and Scott Dixon.
