Juventus’s Leonardo Bonucci set to join Milan

Juventus's Leonardo Bonucci set to join Milan

AC Milan announced their agreement to sign Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus this Friday, in one of the more surprising transfers in recent Serie A history. The Italian international, who has been with the Turin club for seven years, is signing a five-year deal with the Milanese club and is confident of closing the deal before the weekend.

Bonucci is considered one of the best defenders in the world. His relationship has deteriorated with the Juventus manager, Max Allegri, and the pair traded insults during a game against Palermo last season; the defender later was dropped against Porto. He has traveled to Milan for his medical this Friday morning.

Milan is going to pay €40m ($45.6m) for the 30-year-old, who has won 70 caps for Italy, and the move continues an incredible summer of investment by the new Chinese owners. They have already paid near $130m on new players, including André Silva (from Porto, $43,4m), Ricardo Rodriguez (from Wolfsburg, $17m), Hakan Calhanoglu (from Bayer Leverkusen, $28,5m), Andrea Conti (from Atalanta, $27,31m) and Mateo Musacchio (Villarreal, $19,4m) among others.

Bonucci, who started his career at Milan’s city rivals Internazionale, has won the Italian league title six years in a row and claimed the Italian Cup three times in his seven years. He has reached two Champions League finals during his time in Turin. Both were lost, the first against Barcelona in 2015 and the second against Real Madrid last month.

Only a few weeks ago, Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said that Bonucci would be the “leader of the Juventus dressing room.” That is the case no longer, as Milan’s new Chinese owners have completed their biggest swoop so far as they reinvent the club before the autumn.
