Nick Perry: Injured finger needs surgery

Mike McCarthy announced prior to Thursday’s practice that Packers linebacker Nick Perry is scheduled for surgery on his injured hand.

McCarthy provided no other specifics on the injury, nor a timeline for Perry’s potential return. Perry has played with a club cast on an injured hand in the past, but McCarthy said he won’t have a prediction on that possibility until after the surgery. Last December, when he broke multiple fingers on his left hand and underwent surgery to insert screws to realign them, Perry missed two games, then played in the remaining games wearing a bulky club cast to protect his hand.

Coach Mike McCarthy said he doesn’t know how much time Perry will miss. He was off to a good start as the bookend to fellow edge rusher Clay Matthews with 1+ sacks. The loss of Perry places added importance on the return of Ahmad Brooks, who was a full participant in practice on Wednesday after missing the Week 2 loss at Atlanta because of a concussion. Brooks was signed by the Packers after the 49ers cut the veteran pass rusher before the regular season. Brooks had 51+ sacks in eight seasons with the 49ers.

For Perry, it’s a continuation of his rotten luck injury-wise. Despite a lengthy injury history, the Packers signed him to a five-year, $60 million deal this offseason that paid him $18 million in a guaranteed signing bonus after he recorded a career-high 11 sacks in 2016. Assuming Perry doesn’t play Sunday, it’ll mark the sixth straight year that the 2012 first-round draft pick has missed at least one game. After playing in only 17 of a possible 32 games his first two seasons in the NFL, Perry had missed only five of a possible 50 games since.

The Packers did not give a timetable when Perry will return, but Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported Perry will likely miss two games because of the injury.

The surgery will fix an injured finger and he shouldn’t miss too much time. It’s not clear when Perry was hurt. He played 53 of 58 defensive snaps against Atlanta, including the final ones, of Sunday night’s loss. But Perry didn’t practice on Wednesday and will be out of the lineup yet again.
