Ravi Shastri named India’s new cricket coach

Ravi Shastri is back in a management role with India’s national team, after being previously the country’s director of cricket. He was a favorite for the vacant role left by Anil Kumble, who resigned after India were beaten by Pakistan in the final of the Champions Trophy last June.

In a statement, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) details: “Mr Shastri has been the team director in the past and brings with him a wealth of experience, both as player and as coach.”

In addition to this, BCCI have also named Zaheer Khan as the country’s bowling consultant while Rahul Dravid will be the overseas batting consultant. In regard to the former, the BCCI added: “Mr Khan is a contemporary cricketer who assumed the mentoring role to a young fast bowling unit even during his playing days with India. His inputs will be of immense value to our young fast bowlers, who have shown tremendous potential in the last couple of years.”

Finally, they detailed this about Dravid: “As the Indian team is to play Test cricket overseas in the next two years, Rahul Dravid’s expertise as batting consultant will be immensely helpful for youngsters”.

The statement closes with The Board wishing the very best to the three of them, hoping they along with the players together will take Indian cricket to new heights.

It’s not the first time Shastri has been involved with managing the national side, as he was India’s director of cricket in 2014. He also had applied for the head coach role in 2016, but missed out, with Kumble being chosen instead.
