Rodgers had fracture, sprain, should be fine

As if the MCL sprain wasn’t bad enough, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers played through a tibial plateau fracture last season, he disclosed on ESPN Milwaukee.

The injury, sustained during the first half of the Week 1 game against Chicago, limited Rodgers for much of the season but did not sideline him for any games.

“If you watch the hit back, just my two bones that come together on the outside just kind of made an indent fracture,” Rodgers said in an interview that aired on Tuesday but was conducted on Monday. “Very painful. The good thing was it’s not super-weight bearing, load bearing every single time, but there’s definitely some movements and things you do naturally that affected it.”

Rodgers played with a knee brace for the first half of the season, finally going without it for the Nov. 4 game at New England. “The MCL was frustrating because it did start to get better and then Christian Jones tackled me on the sideline in Detroit early in the game and it basically reset the whole thing,” Rodgers said.

“I don’t feel like after the first quarter of the season, the first game, I really wasn’t 100 percent the entire year. That’s not an excuse for the way I played or didn’t play, but it limited my mobility for a good part of the season.”

The injury limited a big part of Rodgers’ game, which has been his ability to extend plays and make big plays outside the pocket. Along with other stats, the injury showed up in his incredible number of throwaways. According to Pro Football Focus, Rodgers had a league-high 59 throwaways. The Rams’ Jared Goff had 46 and no other quarterback had more than 30.

Rodgers and the rest of the team convened for the start of offseason workouts on Monday. Rodgers said he feels good and has made some changes to his offseason training in hopes of entering the season healthy – and staying healthy. “I feel like I’m in pretty good shape,” he said.
