Arizona Diamondbacks’ Tyler Gilbert tosses MLB’s eighth no-hitter of the season in first start

Tyler Gilbert, gotten by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft only eight months ago, threw a no-hitter in the first start of his major league career on Saturday night. He did so by blanking a star-studded San Diego Padres lineup while toeing the rubber for a last-place team, writing one of the most improbable sports stories of 2021. Gilbert, 27, became the fourth pitcher in baseball history to throw a no-hitter in his first big league start. Only two have done that since the start of the 20th century, most recently Bobo Holloman in 1953. “Amazing,” Gilbert […]

The Brewers revealed Tuesday they have added Shaw to their 40-man roster, making him one of the leading candidates for playing time at third base. Shaw, who played for Milwaukee from 2017-19 and spent last season with Toronto, signed a minor league deal last month. The contract included terms stating he could request his release if the Brewers didn’t notify him by Monday whether they intended to put him on the 40-man roster. “It’s pretty much everything I expected, pretty much everything they told me going into the process so […]

Indians manager Terry Francona dealing with blood clotting issue

The Cleveland Indians may be without manager Terry Francona even longer than anticipated. Francona has already missed 15 matches with a gastrointestinal issue, and Chris Antonetti, the team’s president of baseball operations, disclosed Tuesday that the 61-year-old manager has also been dealing with blood clotting issues. Antonetti said doctors at the Cleveland Clinic inserted a stent last week to help Francona’s blood flow “around what was a clogged filter in his veins.” Francona is currently recovering in his downtown apartment and Antonetti said there is no timetable on when he’ll back.
