Cubs’ Pete Crow-Armstrong gets 1st MLB hit with tiebreaking home run

Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a tiebreaking two-run homer for his first major league hit, and the Chicago Cubs swept the Houston Astros with a 3-1 victory on Thursday. Houston has lost a season-high five consecutive and eight of nine overall. At 7-19, it is off to its worst 26-game start since it was 6-20 in 1969. First-year manager Joe Espada was ejected by plate umpire Jansen Visconti in the top of the ninth. “I just did not agree with his strike zone all day,” Espada said after his first ejection as a big league manager. Crow-Armstrong was recalled from Triple-A Iowa when Cody Bellinger was placed on the 10-day […]

Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey was named the NBA’s most improved player Tuesday night, defeating out Chicago Bulls guard Coby White and Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun. He also became an All-Star for the first time as he transitioned into playing point guard full-time following James Harden being traded to the LA Clippers. “I have had to take different steps,” Maxey stated during an interview with TNT before the Minnesota Timberwolves played the Phoenix Suns in Game 2 of their first-round series Tuesday night, when he was presented with the award. “In […]

Sixers outduel Heat down stretch to clinch No. 7 seed in East

The 76ers needed all the improbable tricks they could summon to even have an opportunity at winning their first play-in game. Nicolas Batum hit game-shifting 3-pointers. Buddy Hield was in the mix. Even the promise of free chicken nuggets was enough to revive an offense and smother the boos from Philly fans that rained inside the arena. But in crunch time, the game came down to Joel Embiid. Always Joel Embiid. With the NBA MVP on the court, the 76ers proved they have a shot at a long postseason run as long as he’s in the lineup. Embiid had 23 points, 15 rebounds and one huge […]

Detroit Pistons set NBA record with 27th straight loss

It’s history not many fans inside Little Caesars Arena were looking forward to experiencing Tuesday night, but the Detroit Pistons couldn’t avoid NBA infamy, dropping their 27th consecutive game with a 118-112 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. It’s the most consecutive losses in a single season in league history. The 76ers have the overall record, losing 28 straight, but that spanned the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. Detroit hasn’t won a match since its home opener Oct. 28, versus Chicago, and now is 2-28 on the season. Entering Tuesday’s game, Pistons coach Monty Williams couldn’t avoid the topic of the all-time losing mark — […]

Brewers finalizing deal to name Pat Murphy as manager

The Milwaukee Brewers are working to finalize a deal which will promote longtime bench coach Pat Murphy to manager, sources confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday. Murphy will replace Craig Counsell, who left to become manager of the Chicago Cubs last week. The Athletic was first to report the news of Murphy’s impending hire. Murphy, 64, has been the Brewers’ bench coach since 2016. Prior to that, he worked for the San Diego Padres from 2010 to 2015, including a stint as their interim manager that final season. He also was the head coach at Arizona State and at Notre Dame, where he coached Counsell. Looking for […]

Cubs fire David Ross, hire Craig Counsell as new manager

The Chicago Cubs fired manager David Ross and hired Craig Counsell on Monday. The longtime Milwaukee Brewers manager was lured to Chicago with a record-setting five-year, $40 million contract, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN. The moves, which the Cubs announced Monday afternoon, stunned the baseball world, which had seen Counsell’s return to Milwaukee or hiring by the New York Mets as the likeliest outcomes. The Cubs had publicly praised Ross, with owner Tom Ricketts saying Oct. 2: “He’s our guy.” When Counsell’s contract with the Brewers expired Oct. 31, the Cubs moved quickly to indicate their interest and offered a deal that shattered the […]

Mike Clevinger pitches a 6-hitter as the White Sox beat the Nationals 6-1

Mike Clevinger pitched a six-hitter for his third career complete game, and the Chicago White Sox defeated the Washington Nationals 6-1 on Monday night. Luis Robert Jr. hit a three-run homer for Chicago, which improved to 5-12 in September. Tim Anderson had four of the team’s 15 hits. Clevinger was working on a shutout before Dominic Smith hit his 10th homer with two out in the ninth inning. Smith walked slowly to first while watching the shot to right-center, and then flipped his bat. Clevinger (8-8) apparently took exception and exchanged words with Smith, prompting benches to clear in an incident that didn’t escalate beyond shouting. Clevinger then struck […]

Cubs are 9-5 favorites in Las Vegas to win the World Series

The Chicago Cubs are the clear-cut favorites to win the World Series, a feat that would end their 108-year championship drought and take a bite out of some, but not all, Las Vegas sportsbooks. The Cubs are 9-5 to win the World Series at the Westgate SuperBook, followed by the Boston Red Sox at 9-2, the Texas Rangers at 5-1 and the Los Angeles Dodgers at 7-1. The Toronto Blue Jays and Washington Nationals are each 8-1, with the San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Indians each listed at 12-1. Chicago is the worst-case scenario for the Wynn race and sportsbook, which, for the past two years, had offered a proposition wager on whether the Cubs would […]

White Sox rally for 3 runs in ninth, beat Guardians 5-3 as teams await discipline for nasty brawl

Elvis Andrus knows he’ll one day miss playing at Progressive Field. The Guardians won’t miss him. Andrus, who has tortured Cleveland pitching throughout his career, hit a two-run single after Chicago tied it in the ninth inning on consecutive throwing errors by rookie Bryan Rocchio, sending the White Sox to a 5-3 victory Sunday. Andrus went 3 for 5, raising his career average to .376 (74 for 197) with nine homers, 30 RBI and 36 runs in Cleveland. While he was with Texas from 2009 to 2020, the 34-year-old had a 39-game hitting streak here. “I don’t know, man,” Andrus said […]
