Pistons fire coach Monty Williams after one season, owe him $65 million

The Detroit Pistons on Wednesday fired coach Monty Williams after one season, absorbing the remaining $65 million on his contract. New Pistons president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon, who was hired a month ago, had been meeting regularly with Williams regarding the franchise’s future, but the decision to dismiss Williams was directed from the ownership level with Tom Gores, sources told ESPN. Langdon delivered the news to Williams on Wednesday morning, sources said. Gores and Pistons vice chairman Arn Tellem had been advocates of dismissing Williams, sources said. Slovakia upset Belgium as VAR denies Lukaku twice

Ivan Schranz scored Slovakia’s quickest goal at a major tournament to take his side to a gritty upset 1-0 triumph over wasteful Belgium in European Championship Group E on Monday. It was Belgium’s first loss in 16 matches under coach Domenico Tedesco and a flashback to their disastrous 2022 World Cup campaign, although they did have two goals ruled out by VAR. Both were from the boot of Romelu Lukaku, the first for offside and the second a handball in the buildup on a hugely frustrating day for the Roma striker in which he also missed several clear-cut chances. After the match in Frankfurt, Germany, […]

Veteran safety Tony Jefferson ends retirement, joins Chargers

The Chargers signed safety Tony Jefferson on Friday, the team revealed. Jefferson spent last season as a scouting intern with the Baltimore Ravens after announcing his retirement in May 2023. As an intern, he worked under current Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz, who was then the Ravens’ director of player personnel. Before turning to scouting, Jefferson played for 10 seasons in the NFL. That included 3½ seasons in Baltimore, where he worked with current Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, a defensive assistant and defensive backs coach for the Ravens from 2017 to 2020. O’Connell confirms Sam Darnold will start at Vikings training camp

Sam Darnold will continue as the Minnesota Vikings’ lead quarterback when training camp opens next month, coach Kevin O’Connell stated Wednesday as the team wrapped up its final OTA of the spring. O’Connell stopped short of projecting anything beyond that, saying he plans for a “competitive” training camp at many positions. The Vikings have three other quarterbacks on their roster: Rookie J.J. McCarthy and veterans Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall. “We haven’t had to put out a depth chart or anything like that,” O’Connell said, “but yeah, I would say Sam would be the guy I would look to based upon the spring he’s had, and really […]

UConn coach Dan Hurley traveled to Southern California for a Friday meeting with Los Angeles Lakers vice president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka and owner Jeanie Buss — with the organization eager to close on a deal to hire the two-time national championship coach. The Lakers’ pursuit of Hurley to become the franchise’s next coach has accelerated and the sides are already discussing the contractual parameters of a potential deal that would be significant in its length and salary, sources said. Cardinals’ Kyler Murray ‘locked in’ after late start in 2023

Nine practices into OTAs, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray says he can already see the differences being in the second year of a new system. According to Murray, that has led him to also see what’s ahead for a team that went 4-13 last year, but 3-4 after he returned in Week 10 from an ACL injury. “I don’t put any limitation on what we can do,” Murray said Wednesday in his first public remarks this offseason. Murray missed last offseason while he rehabilitated his injury and learned new schemes and a new front office. This offseason, he said, has been spent building on […]

Mirra Andreeva stuns Aryna Sabalenka to reach French Open semifinals

With the insouciance of a 17-year-old having the time of her life here, Mirra Andreeva says she and her coach work out a game plan before a tennis match — and then she forgets all about it, preferring to just wing it. Seems to be working out fine so far: The unseeded Russian is the youngest Grand Slam semifinalist in more than a quarter century. Playing in only her sixth major tournament, Andreeva got past an ill No. 2 seed Aryna Sabalenka 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4 at the French Open on Wednesday. On Thursday, Andreeva goes up versus another surprising player: No. 12 Jasmine Paolini, a 28-year-old […]

Celtics handle Pacers, take 2-0 Eastern Conference finals lead

Jaylen Brown was a big enough problem for the Indiana Pacers even before an All-NBA snub that may have given him an added desire to show how much he can do for the Boston Celtics. “I think he cares about it in a way that motivates him, and I think he doesn’t really care about it at all,” Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla stated after watching Brown match his playoff career high of 40 points in Boston’s 126-110 victory over Indiana in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals Thursday night. “He understands that winning is the most important thing,” Mazzulla said. “He just cares […]
