Diamondbacks erase early deficit again and beat Brewers 5-2 to sweep NL Wild Card Series

Two years after suffering through a 110-loss season, the Arizona Diamondbacks are spraying champagne and heading to the NL Division Series. They feel like they belong, too. “In ’22, you kind of saw the shift toward the end of the year, and then we came in this year and this is what we expected to do,” Zac Gallen said after he pitched the Diamondbacks to a 5-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night and a sweep of their NL Wild Card Series. “We expected to be playing in October.” It’s the first NL Division Series for the franchise since 2017. The Diamondbacks will take […]

Diamondbacks rally against Nationals’ beleaguered bullpen in 10-5 win

Pavin Smith homered and drove in three runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied versus Washington’s beleaguered bullpen to defeat the Nationals 10-5 on Tuesday night. Josh Rojas also had three RBI for Arizona, which moved ahead of Los Angeles for the NL West lead soon after the game when the Dodgers blew a late lead at Cincinnati. The Diamondbacks have gained seven of nine to improve to 36-25. “We just chipped away,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said after his team trailed 4-1 after one inning. “That was my mindset. It was still early. We had a chance to play catch-up if we did what […]

Royals, Zack Greinke finalize $8.5M deal for 2023 season

The Kansas City Royals concluded Zack Greinke’s $8.5 million contract for the upcoming season on Friday, bringing back a well-known and veteran arm to their otherwise young starting rotation. The deal for the 39-year-old right-hander includes up to $7.5 million in performance bonuses. He made $13 million with the Royals last season, when he went 3-9 with a 3.68 ERA while allowing two runs or fewer in 17 of 26 starts. Greinke started his career in Kansas City as a first-round pick in the 2002 amateur draft. And after fits and starts, and nearly walking away from baseball early in his professional […]

Blue Jays acquire Daulton Varsho in trade with Diamondbacks

The Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks completed a trade Friday that sent outfielder Daulton Varsho to Toronto for top catching prospect Gabriel Moreno and outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr.. After an offseason in which the Diamondbacks have sought to deal from their outfield surplus and the Blue Jays from their surfeit of catchers, the sides came together on one of the biggest deals of the winter and filled glaring needs for both. Varsho, 26, broke out in 2022 with 27 home runs and well-above-average defense in center field and right field. One of the Diamondbacks’ four young left-handed-hitting outfielders, along with Corbin Carroll, Jake McCarthy and Alek Thomas, Varsho batted .235/.302/.443 and stole […]

Brewers’ playoff hopes end despite 6-5 win over Diamondbacks

Hunter Renfroe homered in a ninth-inning comeback and singled home the winning run in the 10th but the Milwaukee Brewers were eliminated from postseason contention on Monday night despite a 6-5 triumph over the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Brewers knew at the start of the night they could earn the NL’s final wild-card spot only if they won their last three matches while Philadelphia lost three consecutive. Milwaukee’s chances ended nine minutes after their walk-off when the Phillies (87-73) beat the beat the Houston Astros 3-0 to clinch the National League’s third and final wild card. Milwaukee (85-75) trailed 4-1 before tying the game in the ninth […]

Tyler Gilbert gave up two hits in another sharp outing, Ketel Marte homered and the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the Seattle Mariners 5-4 on Sunday. Seattle is now three games behind Boston for the second wild-card spot with the Red Sox coming to town Monday for a three-game series. It was the first road series victory for the Diamondbacks since April 23-25 when they took two of three from Atlanta. Asked if he remembered the last road series win, David Peralta paused […]

Lowe helps power Rangers sweep past Diamondbacks 8-5

Nathaniel Lowe didn’t want to steal the thunder from his brother Josh’s big day. Lowe had three hits and missed a cycle by a home run as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-5 Wednesday to match a season high with their fourth consecutive win. The big news in the Lowe family was the major league debut of younger brother Josh with Nathaniel’s former team, the Tampa Bay Rays. He was in the Rays’ starting lineup, batting eighth and playing right field, versus the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Wednesday night. Nathaniel had a shot at the cycle in the ninth but grounded out. “I […]

Dodgers put Walker Buehler on IL, reinstate Joe Kelly

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed starting pitcher Walker Buehler on the injured list Thursday due to a lingering blister issue in his pitching hand and reinstated hard-throwing reliever Joe Kelly, who will start serving his five-game suspension for his confrontation with Houston Astros hitters in late July. Buehler was placed on the IL in late August because of the same blister, which resides on his right index finger, and he missed a couple of turns through the rotation. He pitched five scoreless innings in his return on Sept. 2, but gave up five runs (two earned) in the third inning versus the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday and later was […]
