Pujols homers against team that cut him, Dodgers beat Angels

Albert Pujols hit his first home run versus the Los Angeles Angels since they released him in May, sending Walker Buehler and the Dodgers to an 8-2 victory Sunday. Cody Bellinger, the former NL MVP who has struggled mightily this season, homered for the second consecutive game, helping the World Series champions take two of three at Dodger Stadium in the Freeway Series. Trea Turner, making his second start as the leadoff batter for the Dodgers since being obtained with Max Scherzer in a trade with Washington, scored twice. Pujols hit a two-run homer in the second inning, connecting as a pinch-hitter for Justin Turner, who exited with […]

Albert Pujols in agreement with Los Angeles Dodgers on major league deal

The Los Angeles Dodgers and future Hall of Fame first baseman Albert Pujols are in agreement on a major league contract, sources told ESPN on Saturday. The deal, first reported by the Los Angeles Times, isn’t expected to become official until Monday, a source said. When it does, the Dodgers will pay Pujols only the prorated portion of the major league minimum salary for the rest of the campaign, roughly $420,000, a sum that will be subtracted from the $30 million salary that is being paid to him by the Los Angeles Angels. Pujols, in the last year of his 10-year, $240 million […]

Shaw, Lauer lead Brewers past Bauer, Dodgers 2-1

Travis Shaw hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning off Trevor Bauer, Eric Lauer won in his first start of the campaign and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1 on Thursday night. It was the first meeting of the two teams since the first round of last year’s NL playoffs, a two-game sweep by the World Series champion Dodgers. Bauer (3-1) permitted four hits, but the one that hurt was Shaw’s in the fourth. After Avisaíl García walked, Shaw drove a 2-2 curveball over the wall in right. “Probably the wrong pitch,” Bauer said. “Just frustrated with choosing the wrong one.” Bauer went eight […]

Dodgers put Walker Buehler on IL, reinstate Joe Kelly

The Los Angeles Dodgers placed starting pitcher Walker Buehler on the injured list Thursday due to a lingering blister issue in his pitching hand and reinstated hard-throwing reliever Joe Kelly, who will start serving his five-game suspension for his confrontation with Houston Astros hitters in late July. Buehler was placed on the IL in late August because of the same blister, which resides on his right index finger, and he missed a couple of turns through the rotation. He pitched five scoreless innings in his return on Sept. 2, but gave up five runs (two earned) in the third inning versus the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday and later was […]

Clayton Kershaw records 2500th career strikeouts

Clayton Kershaw reached two career strikeout milestones and held Arizona hitless into the sixth inning Thursday night, leading the Los Angeles Dodgers past the Diamondbacks 5-1 for their fifth consecutive victory. While racking up eight strikeouts over six scoreless innings, Kershaw (5-1) became the 39th pitcher in major league history with 2,500 strikeouts when he fanned Nick Ahmed in the second. The left-hander then caught and passed Christy Mathewson (2,502) for 38th place on baseball’s career list by getting Carson Kelly and Tim Locastro in the third. AJ Pollock had a pinch-hit homer and Mookie Betts added an RBI single […]

Dodgers’ Joe Kelly suspended 8 games by MLB for incident with Astros

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly was suspended for eight games by Major League Baseball on Wednesday, a day after throwing a fastball near the head of Houston’s Alex Bregman and mockingly taunting Astros star Carlos Correa. Benches cleared after Kelly’s movements during the sixth inning of Los Angeles’ 5-2 victory at Minute Maid Park. The game marked the first time the teams had met since it was revealed Houston stole signs en route to a 2017 World Series title that came at the Dodgers’ expense. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was suspended one game and Astros manager Dusty Baker was fined an unrevealed amount. Baker said he was […]

Scherzer to pitch for Nationals’ survival in Game 4

Washington Nationals right-hander Max Scherzer answered without hesitation when asked whether an extra day of rest would help him more in terms of quality or quantity. “Everything,” he said. That explains why Nationals manager Dave Martinez saved Scherzer for Game 4 of the National League Division Series on Monday night against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers in the nation’s capital. But now the pressure is on Scherzer and his teammates as they face a win-or-go-home situation against Los Angeles, which holds a 2-1 edge in the best-of-five series. The Dodgers relied on a seven-run sixth inning to sprint to a 10-4 win in a pivotal […]
