Ferrari’s gains see it emerge as Red Bull’s nearest rival

Although still 20 seconds shy of Max Verstappen’s Red Bull at the chequered flag, Ferrari’s performance at the Japanese Grand Prix showed just how much progress the team has made with its winter of car development. Just six months ago, the Italian team concluded the same race 40 seconds adrift of race winner Verstappen, ranking fourth and sixth in the final classification compared to Sunday’s third and fourth. Defeating Red Bull in a consecutive fight (i.e., without the help of a Verstappen retirement, as happened in Australia this year) still seems like a stretch, but on the right circuit in the right circumstances, […]

Horner: ‘No tension’ with Verstappen but no one bigger than team

Christian Horner stated he would not stand in the way of Max Verstappen leaving Red Bull if he prefers to do so, but he remains confident the reigning champion will stay at the team beyond the end of this year. Despite winning the opening two rounds of the season, divisions and controversy within Red Bull have led to suggestions that Verstappen, who has a contract with Red Bull until 2028, could leave the team at the end of the year. A rift appeared within Red Bull last week after the team’s parent company, Red Bull GmbH, cleared Horner of allegations of inappropriate […]

Verstappen wins again, skirting questions of Red Bull future

After comfortably winning the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix on Saturday, Max Verstappen and Red Bull are cruising toward another championship season. Both, however, are refusing to be the first to blink in the deepening mystery regarding the three-time Formula One world champion’s future beyond 2024. The sort of victory witnessed at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit on Saturday night is what we’ve come to expect from this dominant Red Bull outfit. Verstappen led from pole, only briefly dropping to second after an early Safety Car, and was so far out in front that he was turning down his engine setting late on. It was utterly […]

FIA boss Mohammed Ben Sulayem under investigation

FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is reportedly under investigation by the organization he leads after a whistleblower alleged he interfered with the result of last year’s Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. According to BBC Sport, a report has been submitted by an FIA compliance officer to the governing body’s ethics committee that alleges Ben Sulayem intervened to overturn a penalty given to Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso. A spokesperson for the FIA, asked for a comment on the report, could not confirm any details but stated “the matter is being discussed internally”. The investigation relates to a 10-second penalty given to Alonso at the 2023 Saudi […]

Max Verstappen’s 2023 officially the most dominant F1 season ever

With his 17th victory of the Formula One season, Triple World Champion Max Verstappen became the most dominant driver in the history of the sport during a campaign. The greatest season win percentage, until this Sunday’s São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos, was 75% for the late Italian champion Alberto Ascari, who won six of the eight world championship races with Ferrari in 1952. With 20 races under his belt, Verstappen’s percentage is at 85%. Should he lose the final two races of the season in Las Vegas and Abu Dhabi, he will still finish over 77%. When asked how […]

Max Verstappen holds off Charles Leclerc for crucial win in Miami

Max Verstappen caught and passed both Ferraris and held off late pressure from Charles Leclerc to attain the first Miami Grand Prix. Starting third, defending world champion Verstappen bullied his way past the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz at Turn 1 to move up to second before overtaking Leclerc on Lap 9. Verstappen’s Red Bull had looked set for a routine win from there until Lando Norris’ McLaren was spun out of the race by Pierre Gasly, prompting a safety car in the closing stages. That brought Leclerc right back onto his tail, but Verstappen drove faultlessly to stay ahead, cutting […]

Hamilton wins Abu Dhabi FP to finish the season

Six-times world champion Lewis Hamilton wrapped up the Formula One season in style on Sunday by cruising unchallenged to a dominant triumph in Abu Dhabi in his 250th grand prix. The 34-year-old Mercedes driver led every lap from pole position to checkered flag, banging in a fastest lap for good measure to emphasize his supremacy under the Yas Marina floodlights. Red Bull’s Dutch driver Max Verstappen was runner-up, 16.7 seconds behind the Briton, to cement third place in the championship. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was third but in danger of disqualification for a fuel irregularity. Valtteri Bottas finished fourth for Mercedes after starting […]
