Cool Papa Bell scores biggest upset in Hambletonian history with 52-1 odds

Coming from a baseball background, Scott Farber had a perfect name for the yearling he brought for $100,000 in 2020. Hall of Famer and Negro Leagues legend Cool Papa Bell was considered by many the fastest man ever to play, and Farber had hopes his trotter would one day emulate James Thomas Bell as a runner. Giancarlo Stanton, Byron Buxton homer as American League wins 9th straight All-Star Game

The first All-Star Game at Dodger Stadium in 42 years featured Clayton Kershaw starting in front of the home fans and appearances from Albert Pujols and Miguel Cabrera, but the final score looked all too familiar: The American League won 3-2 for its ninth consecutive All-Star triumph and 21st in the past 25 Midsummer Classics. The game turned in the fourth inning when Giancarlo Stanton and Byron Buxton delivered back-to-back home runs off the Dodgers’ Tony Gonsolin. Neither were cheated with their swings. Stanton’s game-tying two-run shot was a 457-foot blast to left-center — longer than any home run hit at Dodger Stadium in the first half of the season. […]

Gerrit Cole’s longest no-hit bid of MLB career broken up in 8th inning as New York Yankees beat Tampa Bay Rays for 50th win

Gerrit Cole will continue topping the list of best active major league pitchers without a no-hitter after a spectacular seven-inning performance in the New York Yankees’ 4-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field on Monday night. The triumph put the Yankees a season-high-tying 33 games over .500 at 50-17, matching the historic 1998 club for the third-best 67-game start in franchise history. Cole, trying to become the 13th pitcher to throw a no-hitter in pinstripes, permitted only three baserunners through seven innings before infielder Isaac Paredes’ sharp grounder up the middle in the eighth put an end to the longest no-hit bid of Cole’s […]

Padres hire Ruben Niebla as pitching coach before landing manager

San Diego Padres general manager A.J. Preller has hired a pitching coach before landing a manager. Preller hired Ruben Niebla away from Cleveland on Wednesday, saying a number of factors made the Guardians’ assistant pitching coach and Southern California native too good to pass up even as San Diego’s managerial search stretched to three weeks. Niebla, 49, has been Cleveland’s assistant pitching coach for the last two campaigns. Before that, he spent seven seasons as the Guardians’ minor league pitching coordinator. Overall, he spent 21 seasons in Cleveland’s organization. He is widely credited with helping develop starters such as Shane Bieber, former […]
