Horse named after fauci wins race at keeneland

A young Thoroughbred with a celebrity namesake broke his maiden during the second day of Keeneland’s five-day Summer Meet. Fauci, a 2-year-old colt trained by Wesley Ward, notched his first career triumph during his second career start in the opening race at the Lexington track on Thursday. Tyler Gaffalione steered the heavy favorite to a hard-fought victory in the 5 1/2-furlong, $70,000 turf contest. Fauci was the 5-2 morning-line favorite but was bet down to 1-1 odds at post time, perhaps due to the cachet carried by his moniker. Co-owner Phillip Antonacci named Fauci after Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National […]

Freudnme, a 4-year-old colt trained by Chris Englehart, exhibited fever and neurological symptoms Saturday morning, which activated a precautionary quarantine of all 37 horses stabled in Barn 37 at Belmont. In addition, heightened biosecurity measures were immediately implemented throughout the barn, and all horses were monitored for fever and other symptoms. All horses in Barn 37 were found to be afebrile and asymptomatic. As a result, […]

Away since his trip home from Saudi Arabia, Karl Watson, Mike Pegram, and Paul Weitman’s McKinzie returned to business June 7 and took the $200,000 Triple Bend Stakes (G2) at Santa Anita Park in a hand ride from Mike Smith. “This was a perfect out for him. Hannum: Outlook uncertain for flat racing season in Virginia

Last year, the recovery of the horse racing industry in Virginia was one of the good news stories of the summer. This year, Virginia Equine Alliance executive director Jeb Hannum stays hopeful the flat racing meet at Colonial Downs can go on as programmed, but there are some challenges, he told Glenn Petty of Old Dominion Horseracing News. Hannum pointed out that OTBs are closed right now due to the coronavirus outbreak, which means there is no money coming in to fuel purses for this summer’s meet. Obviously, the longer those closures go on, the longer the purse accounts will […]
