Carlos Alcaraz injures ankle, exits Rio Open after 2 games

Two-time major winner Carlos Alcaraz retired hurt from the Rio Open on Tuesday after two matches due to a right ankle injury. The retirement at 1-1 meant Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro advanced to the second round. He will face his compatriot Felipe Meligeni Alves for a place in the quarterfinals. Alcaraz twisted his ankle in the first game after only two points. He received medical attention, broke Monteiro’s serve, but after the Brazilian pulled level he shook his rival’s hand and left the court walking as his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero looked concerned. The Spanish player stated his doctors said the injury was not serious. “These things happen, even […]

Ben Simmons won’t return to the Brooklyn Nets until at least January because of a pinched nerve in his lower back. The Nets stated Wednesday that Simmons, who sustained his latest back injury Nov. 6, has shown consistent strength improvement in his back over the past two weeks. However, they added that he is still doing only individual court work and that his status would be updated again in approximately two weeks. “We’re doing this two-week thing just to give you some sort of semblance of being able to communicate with you,” head coach Jacque Vaughn said. “But he’s just continued to improve […]

Majors record makes Novak Djokovic best in history, Nadal says

Rafael Nadal’s most recent Grand Slam victory came at the French Open in 2022, and with Novak Djokovic having overtaken his mark for most major titles in men’s tennis, the Spanish player conceded that his rival is the best player in history. Djokovic’s recent victory at the US Open, his third Grand Slam title this year, took his tally to 24 majors, two ahead of Nadal’s total. “I believe that numbers are numbers and statistics are statistics. In that sense, I think he [Djokovic] has better numbers than mine and that is indisputable,” Nadal said in an interview with AS published Wednesday. […]

Andy Murray pulled out of the Cincinnati Open late Monday with an abdominal strain. The 36-year-old keeps recovering from the injury as he prepares to compete in the US Open that starts later this month in New York. Cincinnati is among some of the tournaments that players view as tune-ups for the Open. Murray withdrew from last week’s Canadian Open before his round-of-16 clash with eventual champion Jannik Sinner due to the strain. He first felt the injury after spending nearly five hours on court in triumphs over Lorenzo Sonego and Max Purcell. Looking for the best online betting site and Live betting? Visit Heritage Sports! Bengals RB Trayveon Williams carted off with ankle injury

Trayveon Williams, one of the contenders to be the Cincinnati Bengals’ top backup running back, left Tuesday’s practice on a cart after suffering a right ankle injury. Following the departure of Samaje Perine in free agency, Williams was in the mix to become the team’s top reserve option behind starter Joe Mixon. After Tuesday’s practice, Bengals coach Zac Taylor stated he didn’t have any immediate updates on Williams’ status and that the team would continue to gather more information. However, Taylor praised Williams’ growth since the team drafted him in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft. “He’s always been a guy that’s […]

Aaron Judge faces live pitching for 1st time since toe injury

New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge faced live pitching on Sunday for the first time since tearing a ligament in his right toe on June 3. In a simulated match versus Jonathan Loaisiga, who is rehabbing from right elbow surgery, Judge saw 16 pitches. He did not put any balls in play but fouled off four pitches, including one to the upper deck behind home plate. “To be able to take pitches where your swing says no, those are tests that he’s got to go through in working his way back,” manager Aaron Boone said before the Yankees concluded a three-game series with […]

Yankees’ Aaron Judge out after banging toe during wild catch

Aaron Judge was out of the New York Yankees’ starting lineup on Sunday, one day after penetrating the right-field gate at Dodger Stadium to turn in a phenomenal over-the-shoulder catch late in Saturday’s triumph. Yankees manager Aaron Boone stated Judge’s right foot, mostly in the area of his big toe, was too sore to play. Judge “seemed a little bit better this afternoon,” Boone added, but keeping him out of the lineup for the series finale versus the Los Angeles Dodgers allows them to take advantage of Monday’s off day and give Judge back-to-back days off his feet. Asked if he thinks Judge might […]

Emma Raducanu withdraws from Madrid Open with hand injury

Former US Open champion Emma Raducanu withdrew from the Madrid Open shortly before she was due on court to play Viktoriya Tomova in the first round Wednesday. The 20-year-old British player cited an injury to her right hand as the motive for her withdrawal. It is the latest setback for Raducanu, who has struggled for form and fitness since her fairy-tale run to the title at Flushing Meadows in 2021 as an 18-year-old qualifier. She lost in the first round in Miami and Stuttgart, and by missing Madrid, she will likely fall outside the top 100 in the WTA rankings for the first time […]

Mets star closer Edwin Diaz says he hopes to return this season

New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz has not ruled out returning before the end of the campaign, saying his injured knee is progressing well. Diaz, speaking to the media for the first time since tearing his right patellar tendon while celebrating at the World Baseball Classic, said Wednesday that his knee “is doing right” and that his recovery is going “in a good direction.” While the typical recovery timeline for his injury is around eight months, Diaz offered a more optimistic prognosis. “I might throw this season,” he said. “As of right now, my knee is doing right.
