Eric Chavez opts to be New York Mets hitting coach just weeks after being hired by Yankees

The New York Mets have agreed to hire Eric Chavez as their hitting coach, just weeks after he joined the crosstown New York Yankees as an assistant hitting coach, sources confirmed to ESPN on Thursday. Neither team has spoken openly on the matter, but the transition, while uncommon, was said to have been executed in good faith. Chavez, who was revealed as part of Aaron Boone’s staff with the Yankees on Dec. 21, now will help make up the burgeoning staff of longtime manager Buck Showalter and join Mets general manager Billy Eppler for the third time. New York Mets hire Buck Showalter as new manager

The New York Mets have hired Buck Showalter as their new manager, team owner Steven Cohen revealed Saturday on Twitter. Showalter received a three-year contract, according to a person familiar with the deal. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the length of the agreement had not been announced. Showalter, 65, takes over for Luis Rojas, who was fired after a season in which the team held on to first place for 103 days but ultimately concluded 77-85 and missed the playoffs. Houston Astros bench coach Joe Espada and Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Matt Quatraro also were candidates for the […]

Syndergaard sharp in brief return, Mets sweep Marlins in DH

Noah Syndergaard looked sharp in his brief but long-awaited return from Tommy John surgery, and the New York Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 2-1 in nine innings Tuesday night for a doubleheader sweep. Javier Báez dashed home from third base with the winning run in extra innings as Anthony Bass (3-9) fumbled James McCann’s slow bouncer between the mound and home plate. In the opener, Francisco Lindor homered and drove in three runs to help the Mets stop a five-game losing streak with a 5-2 triumph. Marcus Stroman went five innings for his 10th victory. Syndergaard started the nightcap for New York, firing his first major league pitch in two years and […]

Corbin Burnes pitched seven wonderful innings to win his ninth consecutive decision and the Milwaukee Brewers moved to the brink of clinching the NL Central title with a 2-1 triumph over the New York Mets on Saturday night. The Brewers, already assured a fourth consecutive playoff berth, can wrap up the division crown Sunday with a victory at home in the series finale versus the Mets or a Cardinals loss to the Cubs in Chicago. Milwaukee won its second straight following a five-game skid, including a four-game sweep at home by the second-place Cardinals, who have won a team-record 15 in a row. “I think […]

New York Mets don’t sign first-round draft pick Kumar Rocker before deadline

The New York Mets did not sign right-hander Kumar Rocker, the 10th overall pick in the amateur draft, before Sunday’s 5 p.m. ET signing deadline. “This is clearly not the outcome we had hoped for and wish Kumar nothing but success moving forward,” Mets general manager Zack Scott said in a statement. “We’re excited about the players we have signed and look forward to watching them develop and contribute to the organization in the years to come.” Rocker, 21, whose dominance at Vanderbilt made him the most well-known college player in perhaps a decade, had an agreement in place to sign for […]

Hernández hits 2 of Toronto’s 5 homers in 10-3 win over Mets

All-Star Teoscar Hernández hit two of Toronto’s five home runs and the Blue Jays defeated New York Mets 10-3 Saturday night to stop a three-game losing streak. George Springer, Marcus Semien and Bo Bichette also homered for the Blue Jays, who overtook the San Francisco Giants for the MLB lead with 149 homers. The Giants entered the day with 146. The power outburst came on a day in which Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoya tinkered with the lineup and moved Springer from the middle of the lineup to the leadoff spot and slotted All-Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at the second slot. “We felt it was time to make […]

Walker strikes out career-high 12 to lead Mets over Cubs 3-2

Taijuan Walker struck out a career-high 12, Pete Alonso drove in three runs and the surging New York Mets threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the ninth inning of a 3-2 triumph over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night. Walker (6-2) permitted two runs and five hits in seven innings, and he walked none for the third time. Walker had struck out 11 seven times previously, all before he had Tommy John surgery on April 25, 2018. After signing a $23 million, three-year contract with the Mets as a free agent, Walker has a 2.12 ERA, and the Mets are undefeated in his […]

New York Mets reach 1-year deal with CF Kevin Pillar

For most of this offseason, the Mets worked to get stronger up the middle. They got Francisco Lindor to play shortstop, shifted Jeff McNeil to second base and signed James McCann to work behind the plate. Now, the Mets have multiple possibilities in center field as well. The team agreed to terms on Monday on a one-year deal with Kevin Pillar, a historically strong defender who is coming off his best year as a hitter. Pillar won’t necessarily be an everyday starter for the Mets, but his presence gives them the option of moving Brandon Nimmo to left, at least on […]

New York Mets, reliever Trevor May reach 2-year deal

If he’s not the top pitching Trevor in this free-agent market — or perhaps not even the second-best such entity — Trevor May has performed very well out of the bullpen the past three seasons. Now he holds a place in Mets history unlike any player, first names notwithstanding. The 31-year-old right-hander is Steve Cohen’s first significant Mets import. Multiple industry sources confirmed the Mets and May, a 31-year-old right-handed reliever, have agreed to a two-year contract for about $15 million, pending a physical. SNY first reported the agreement after MLB.com first reported that the two sides were deep into […]
