Happ, Cards bullpen combine on 1-hitter, top Pirates 4-1

J.A. Happ combined with a trio of relievers on a one-hitter, Tommy Edman and Paul DeJong homered early and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the skidding Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 on Tuesday night. Happ (6-6) retired the first nine batters, then gave up rookie Hoy Park’s first career home run to lead off the fourth inning. ”I was able to get a couple of quick outs to manage the pitch count and (catcher Yadier Molina) was great back there and we were on the same page all night,” Happ said. “I was just trying to execute pitches and it turned out pretty well.” Making his second start for the Cardinals since […]

McCutchen hits 2 solo homers, Phillies beat Brewers 6-5

Andrew McCutchen hit a pair of solo homers and Brad Miller slammed a three-run shot to back Aaron Nola, helping the Philadelphia Phillies defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-5 on Tuesday night. Nola (3-1) struck out 10 and allowed one run and five hits in six gritty innings as the Phillies held on to earn consecutive victories for the first time since they started the season 4-0. Phillies reliever Enyel De Los Santos, called up from the minors earlier in the day, came out of the bullpen to pitch the seventh but was denied entry by umpires because he didn’t appear on their lineup card. MRI on Milwaukee Brewers star Christian Yelich’s back shows no major issues

The Milwaukee Brewers are moving along with their plan for Christian Yelich after an MRI on the slugger’s strained lower back showed no major issues. Yelich hasn’t played since April 11. He was eligible to come off the injured list this weekend, but the 2018 NL MVP was sent back to Milwaukee because manager Craig Counsell stated Yelich had hit a “plateau” in his recovery. “We basically just ruled out anything significant structurally that would show up on the MRI,” Counsell said before Sunday’s series finale versus the Cubs. “We still need to make progress to get him back on the field and so […]

Cardinals win NL Central; Brewers settle for wild card

The Cardinals on Sunday needed a win over the Cubs at home or a Brewers loss to the Rockies to win the National League Central for 2019. As it turns out, St. Louis handled its own business, as they homered three times en route to a 9-0 win over the Cubs. Ace Jack Flaherty pitched seven shutout innings, which means he’s allowed a total of 12 runs over his last 16 starts heading into the playoffs. The St. Louis win means that the Cardinals will advance to the National League Division Series against the Braves, who won the NL East. Game 1 is scheduled for Oct. 3 in Atlanta. The Brewers, meantime, […]
