Sanó, Twins beat Brewers 8-2 to win season-opening series

Miguel Sanó and Mitch Garver homered to back up Michael Pineda, and the Minnesota Twins defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 8-2 Sunday to win the season-opening series. Luis Arraez went 3 of 3 with a pair of walks as the Twins took two of three. Max Kepler and Sanó each drove in three runs. Pineda (1-0) gave up just one unearned run in five innings. The right-hander struck out five, walked two and premitted four hits. “I believe in my team,” Pineda said. “I know we have a great team.” Cody Stashak, Hansel Robles and Jorge Alcala combined for four innings of one-hit relief. The only hit the bullpen allowed came on Jackie Bradley Jr.’s sixth-inning […]

New York Mets and All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor agree to 10-year, $341 million deal

The New York Mets and shortstop Francisco Lindor have agreed to a 10-year, $341 million deal, a source told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Wednesday. Lindor’s deal will be the third largest based on total value in major league history, trailing only the deals for the Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Trout ($426.5 million) and the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Mookie Betts ($365 million). The Mets were widely expected to sign Lindor to a long-term extension after getting the four-time All-Star in a blockbuster trade with the Cleveland Indians this offseason. The negotiations became a major storyline during spring training, with new Mets owner Steve Cohen writing on Twitter last week, “What do think Lindor will accept? I’m […]

Texas Rangers moving on from Rougned Odor; Jose Leclerc to have Tommy John surgery

Rougned Odor, the Texas Rangers’ starting second baseman over the past seven seasons, has been told he won’t be on the Opening Day roster after switching to third base this spring, the team stated Monday. The Rangers also announced Monday that former closer Jose Leclerc will undergo Tommy John surgery. President of baseball operations Jon Daniels stated the Rangers don’t have an every-day role for Odor. The 27-year-old infielder has two more seasons and $24.6 million left on his six-year contract, as well as a $3 million buyout for a $13.5 million team option in 2023. “I think really what it came down […]

New York Yankees put Corey Kluber second behind Gerrit Cole in rotation

Corey Kluber will follow ace Gerrit Cole in the New York Yankees’ rotation, and Jameson Taillon will be skipped the first time through as the team builds him up slowly in his return following Tommy John surgery. Cole will start Thursday’s opener against Toronto at Yankee Stadium and Kluber, returning from two injury-filled seasons, will start Saturday against the Blue Jays. “When he’s at his best, he’s kind of masterful and precise,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “We’ve seen all that flash this spring.” A 34-year-old righty, Kluber signed an $11 million, one-year contract with the Yankees, his third team in three years, The two-time Cy […]

Texas Rangers’ Jose Leclerc to miss extended time with elbow issue

The Texas Rangers have another potential long-term elbow issue with a late-inning reliever they hoped to count on in a rebuilding campaign. One-time closer Jose Leclerc has returned to Texas because of right elbow soreness, a setback that comes about two weeks after fellow right-hander Jonathan Hernandez was detected with a sprained elbow ligament. The Rangers have already indicated they plan to start the season with Hernandez on the 60-day injured list. General manager Chris Young stated Monday the club won’t know how long Leclerc will be out until after he is examined by team physician Dr. Keith Meister. The 22-year-old reported the soreness after a […]

Yanks star Stanton off to strong start after smashing finish

Giancarlo Stanton is picking up where he finished the postseason last year. Healthy and hard hitting. The New York Yankees slugger homered in each of his first five playoff matches in 2020, a stretch that brought flashbacks of his spectacular 2017 NL MVP season and hopes that several injury-impacted years were behind him. Stanton ended with six homers and 13 RBI in seven postseason games, including a tough five-game Division Series loss to the AL champion Tampa Bay Rays. Stanton is 7 for 21 during spring training with two doubles and a homer that had an exit velocity of 115 mph. He also hit […]

Milwaukee Brewers add Travis Shaw to 40-man roster, where he’ll compete for spot at third base

Travis Shaw’s second stint with the Milwaukee Brewers is off to an encouraging start. The Brewers revealed Tuesday they have added Shaw to their 40-man roster, making him one of the leading candidates for playing time at third base. Shaw, who played for Milwaukee from 2017-19 and spent last season with Toronto, signed a minor league deal last month. The contract included terms stating he could request his release if the Brewers didn’t notify him by Monday whether they intended to put him on the 40-man roster. “It’s pretty much everything I expected, pretty much everything they told me going into the process so […]

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw to start on Opening Day

Washington Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg K’s 4 in 6 batters in first appearance since surgery

Stephen Strasburg pronounced his fastball command better than it was before his carpal tunnel surgery and stated his first game action in nearly seven full months essentially was the same as any other Grapefruit League debut after throwing 1 2/3 innings Tuesday night versus the Houston Astros. “It didn’t really feel any different than it has in past springs, so I guess, in a way, that’s a relief,” said the 2019 World Series MVP, who made just two starts and pitched only five innings in 2020. In 2019, he led the National League with 209 innings and 18 wins, then went 5-0 […]

Los Angeles Dodgers’ Trevor Bauer pitches shutout inning vs. San Diego Padres with one eye closed

Trevor Bauer immersed himself into a budding rivalry between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres with one eye closed. The Dodgers’ prized offseason attainment navigated through his first inning versus the Padres on Saturday afternoon by pitching mostly with his right eye closed, a training method he said he uses frequently as a means to make himself uncomfortable. “I figured if they can’t score off me with one eye open, it’s gonna be difficult to score off me with two eyes open,” Bauer stated after throwing three scoreless innings from the Dodgers’ facility. “Just having a little bit of fun.” Bauer didn’t […]
