‘An Exceptional Horse,’ Flightline Wins TVG Pacific Classic By 19 1/4 Lengths

In one of the most brilliant performances in the history of Del Mar racetrack, undefeated Flightline staked his claim as the outstanding older Thoroughbred in America with a 19 l/4-length victory in the Grade 1, $1 million TVG Pacific Classic on Saturday in Del Mar, Calif. It was a record winning margin, eclipsing the 12 ½-length triumph by Accelerate in the 2018 Pacific Classic. His final time of 1:59.28 was only 17 one-hundredths of a second slower than the track record set by Candy Ride in the 2003 renewal of the mile and one-quarter contest. With regular rider Flavien Prat in the saddle, Flightline […]

Coming from a baseball background, Scott Farber had a perfect name for the yearling he brought for $100,000 in 2020. Hall of Famer and Negro Leagues legend Cool Papa Bell was considered by many the fastest man ever to play, and Farber had hopes his trotter would one day emulate James Thomas Bell as a runner. The wish came through on Saturday as Cool Papa Bell scored the biggest upset in the history of the Hambletonian, charging late to edge filly Joviality S by three-quarters of a length in a crazy finish to the most prestigious race for 3-year-olds in […]

Saratoga 2022: Travers could be Charge It’s coming-out party

The talent has always been there; Todd Pletcher has never had any doubts about that. His colt named Charge It, at some point this year, is going to make some loud noise in the land of the 3-year-olds. That big bang could be coming, and soon. Show up to Saratoga Race Course at the end of August. That very well could be the coming-out party for Charge It, a gray son of Tapit. Just listen to the words from Pletcher, who doesn’t hand out praises like some might hand out M&Ms on Halloween. “From the talent prospective, he can be as […]

Prairie Meadows racehorse tests positive for meth

A horse that won a race at Prairie Meadows has tested positive for meth. The horse named Drag Malibu was drug tested shortly after winning the third race of the day on May 29. “The horse had trace amounts of methamphetamine in his body when the horse ran in the race,” stated Brian Ohorilko, administrator of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. Ohorilko added that they see positive drug tests a handful of times in the year, but a horse testing positive for meth is nearly unheard of. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission found the groom, the person who […]

Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike won’t run Preakness

Kentucky Derby long-shot winner Rich Strike will not race in the Preakness Stakes on May 21. Owner Rick Dawson said in a statement: “Our original plan for Rich Strike was contingent on the KY Derby, should we not run in the Derby we would point toward the Preakness, should we run in the Derby, subject to the race outcome & the condition of our horse, we would give him more recovery time & rest and run in the Belmont, or another race and stay on course to run with 5 or 6 weeks rest between races.” Rich Strike entered the […]

Max Verstappen holds off Charles Leclerc for crucial win in Miami

Max Verstappen caught and passed both Ferraris and held off late pressure from Charles Leclerc to attain the first Miami Grand Prix. Starting third, defending world champion Verstappen bullied his way past the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz at Turn 1 to move up to second before overtaking Leclerc on Lap 9. Verstappen’s Red Bull had looked set for a routine win from there until Lando Norris’ McLaren was spun out of the race by Pierre Gasly, prompting a safety car in the closing stages. That brought Leclerc right back onto his tail, but Verstappen drove faultlessly to stay ahead, cutting […]

With storms coming, Santa Anita looks ‘OK’ for opening day

Under somewhat similar circumstances two years ago, Santa Anita made the pre-emptive move five days early to push back the beginning of its marquee winter-spring meet to Dec. 28 from its traditional day-after-Christmas opening. It was the first time since 1976 the track did not open on Dec. 26. This time around – as things currently stand – Santa Anita plans to open as planned on Sunday. “The track guys pay for a couple of different weather services that give them pretty good information, and right now they think we’re going to be OK,” Santa Anita general manager Nate Newby […]
