Kimari Sets Up for Madison Repeat in Season Debut Score

Kimari  kicked off her 2022 season in style March 3 with a 5 1/4-length romp over four overmatched allowance-level foes in a $55,000 event at Gulfstream Park. Using the 6 1/2-furlong dirt event as a stepping stone to greater heights, trainer Wesley Ward said the 5-year-old daughter of Munnings  will next target a return to top-level company in the April 9 Madison Stakes (G1), a race she earned on the main track at Keeneland last year. With Joel Rosario in the irons Thursday for her first start since a seventh against the boys in the Nov. 6 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint (G1T) at Del Mar, Kimari tracked the […]

With storms coming, Santa Anita looks ‘OK’ for opening day

Under somewhat similar circumstances two years ago, Santa Anita made the pre-emptive move five days early to push back the beginning of its marquee winter-spring meet to Dec. 28 from its traditional day-after-Christmas opening. It was the first time since 1976 the track did not open on Dec. 26. This time around – as things currently stand – Santa Anita plans to open as planned on Sunday. “The track guys pay for a couple of different weather services that give them pretty good information, and right now they think we’re going to be OK,” Santa Anita general manager Nate Newby […]

Smile Happy Gives McPeek Another Kentucky Jockey Club Win

The horse that brought Kenny McPeek to the winner’s circle for the Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs was not the one that most fans would have expected. Instead of Tiz the Bomb, who scratched out of the G2 stakes earlier Saturday, it was Smile Happy, a son of Runhappy, who gave McPeek his third victory in the early prep race for the 2022 Kentucky Derby. In a field scratched down from 14 to 11, Smile Happy broke from post eight, taking up position in fifth around the first turn and onto the backstretch. Setting early fractions of […]

He swept the first three races on Sunday’s nine-race card with Defendant ($3.60), Palomita ($5.60), and Golden Soda ($8.80), respectively. Lonesome Glory a clash of steeplechase titans, with The Mean Queen vs. Snap Decision

The queen of the steeplechase game takes on the king in a Grade 1 showdown in Thursday’s $150,000 Lonesome Glory Stakes, which helps kick off the 28-day Belmont Park fall meet. The Mean Queen, the mare who defeated the boys as the favorite in the Grade 1 Jonathan Sheppard Steeplechase at Saratoga, will now be the hunter when she meets Snap Decision, who seeks his 10th consecutive triumph, in the 2 1/2-mile Lonesome Glory over National fences. Happ, Cards bullpen combine on 1-hitter, top Pirates 4-1

J.A. Happ combined with a trio of relievers on a one-hitter, Tommy Edman and Paul DeJong homered early and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the skidding Pittsburgh Pirates 4-1 on Tuesday night. Happ (6-6) retired the first nine batters, then gave up rookie Hoy Park’s first career home run to lead off the fourth inning. ”I was able to get a couple of quick outs to manage the pitch count and (catcher Yadier Molina) was great back there and we were on the same page all night,” Happ said. “I was just trying to execute pitches and it turned out pretty well.” Making his second start for the Cardinals since […]

Jackie’s Warrior Dominant In Amsterdam, Brings Asmussen Closer To Record

After a thunderous deluge delayed the Grade 2 Amsterdam for thirty minutes, soaking the sealed Saratoga surface, Jackie’s Warrior showed that the delay and the track were no trouble at all for the son of Maclean’s Music. At Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., the 3-year-old’s multi-length triumph brought Steve Asmussen another victory closer to passing Dale Baird and becoming racing’s winningest trainer. A troubled break in the Grade 1 Woody Stephens last time out compromised Jackie’s Warrior’s chances at the victory on the Belmont Stakes undercard, with Drain the Clock taking that G1 stakes race. The two hooked […]
