New York Yankees release outfielder Clint Frazier, infielder Rougned Odor

Outfielder Clint Frazier and infielder Rougned Odor were released by the New York Yankees on Tuesday after they were designated for assignment four days ago and went unclaimed on waivers. The 27-year-old Frazier was the fifth pick overall in the 2013 amateur draft by Cleveland and was a prized prospect when he was obtained by the Yankees in a July 2016 trade that sent reliever Andrew Miller to the Indians. Frazier made his major league debut in July 2017, but the outfielder never has had more than 246 plate appearances in a campaign. His 2018 season was wrecked when he collided with an outfield […]

Lowe helps power Rangers sweep past Diamondbacks 8-5

Nathaniel Lowe didn’t want to steal the thunder from his brother Josh’s big day. Lowe had three hits and missed a cycle by a home run as the Texas Rangers defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-5 Wednesday to match a season high with their fourth consecutive win. The big news in the Lowe family was the major league debut of younger brother Josh with Nathaniel’s former team, the Tampa Bay Rays. He was in the Rays’ starting lineup, batting eighth and playing right field, versus the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park on Wednesday night. Nathaniel had a shot at the cycle in the ninth but grounded out. “I […]

New York Yankees set to acquire Joey Gallo from Texas Rangers for six minor leaguers

The New York Yankees are concluding a deal to acquire outfielder Joey Gallo from the Texas Rangers, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Wednesday night. The deal is pending a medical review. The Rangers will get right-handers Glenn Otto and Randy Vasquez, second baseman Ezequiel Duran, shortstop Josh Smith, second baseman/outfielder Trevor Hauver and outfielder Everson Pereira from New York, sources told Passan. Gallo was a late scratch from the Rangers’ lineup ahead of Wednesday night’s game versus the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, with speculation that a trade was in the works. That proved to be the case, with the Yankees swooping in and acquiring arguably the […]

Hicks’ 4th homer in 4 games helps Rangers top Tigers 10-5

John Hicks became the first player to homer in his first four games with the Rangers/Washington Senators franchise and added a go-ahead single in the seventh inning to lead Texas over the Detroit Tigers 10-5 on Tuesday night. Hicks, brought up from Triple-A Round Rock on June 29 after catcher Jose Trevino got hurt, hit a two-run homer of the left field foul pole in the fourth that put the Rangers ahead 2-1 in a four-run inning. “Fortunately, I’ve gotten good pitches to hit and thankfully hit them well enough they went over the fence,” stated Hicks, who played with the Tigers 2016-19. “I’m not […]

Bullpen shines as Padres blank Rangers for 3-game sweep

Trent Grisham and Manny Machado homered, Craig Stammen led a parade of six effective San Diego relievers after starter Adrian Morejon left early with an injury, and the Padres beat the Texas Rangers 2-0 on Sunday for a three-game sweep. Grisham pulled a 1-0 fastball into the right-field stands off Mike Foltynewicz (0-2), who had retired the first nine batters. Machado hammered a 2-2 changeup off Ian Kennedy deep down the left-field line leading off the ninth. “The way we pitched and played defense, we battled at the plate, got the big one from Grish, and then it’s so nice to get that extra add-on,” Padres manager Jayce Tingler said. “Just a great […]

Texas Rangers moving on from Rougned Odor; Jose Leclerc to have Tommy John surgery

Rougned Odor, the Texas Rangers’ starting second baseman over the past seven seasons, has been told he won’t be on the Opening Day roster after switching to third base this spring, the team stated Monday. The Rangers also announced Monday that former closer Jose Leclerc will undergo Tommy John surgery. President of baseball operations Jon Daniels stated the Rangers don’t have an every-day role for Odor. The 27-year-old infielder has two more seasons and $24.6 million left on his six-year contract, as well as a $3 million buyout for a $13.5 million team option in 2023. “I think really what it came down […]

RHP Kohei Arihara, Texas Rangers reach 2-year deal

Japanese right-hander Kohei Arihara has signed a two-year deal with the Texas Rangers, the team revealed Saturday. The deal is in the $6 million to $7 million range, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The 28-year-old was 8-9 with a 3.46 ERA in 20 starts for Hokkaido during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season in Japan. He led the Pacific League with three complete matches and was second in innings with 132⅔. “The addition of Kohei Arihara strengthens the depth in our starting rotation,” Rangers president of baseball operations Jon Daniels said. “He has had success in Japan over the last six years with […]

Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun undergoes surgery to repair broken jaw

Texas Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun had surgery to repair his broken jaw Monday, a day after being hit in the face by a fastball. Surgeons were prepared to wire Calhoun’s jaw shut but instead installed a plate to steady the fracture, which should make for a faster recovery.  Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said Calhoun would be released from the hospital this week, possibly Tuesday, and will be re-evaluated in two weeks, at which time Texas may get a better idea of his timetable for a return. Daniels said doctors had not yet determined if Calhoun had a concussion. While […]

Todd Frazier gets one year deal with from Rangers

The Texas Rangers agreed to a deal with veteran third baseman Todd Frazier, according to the Dallas Morning News’ Evan Grant. The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported Frazier will get $5 million guaranteed. Frazier, who turns 34 in February, is coming off a 2019 campaign in which he batted .251/.329/.443 for the Mets with 21 home runs in 133 games. Over the last three seasons, Frazier has an OPS+ of 102, and for his career he has a mark of 106. Over that span, the right-handed slugger has averaged 29 home runs per 162 games played. Frazier has a lifetime OPS of .756 against right-handed pitching, but that figure rises to .813 […]

Rangers acquire Cy Young winner Corey Kluber from Indians

Corey Kluber led by example and excellence in Cleveland. The Texas Rangers are hoping he can do the same for them. The Indians traded the two-time Cy Young Award winner – and their unquestioned ace – over the past six seasons to the Rangers on Sunday, a blockbuster deal that could dramatically change both teams. In exchange for the 33-year-old Kluber, Cleveland received outfielder Delino DeShields and pitching prospect Emmanuel Clase, a hard-throwing 21-year-old with huge potential. The stoic and steady Kluber has been one of baseball’s most dominant pitchers since 2014, when he went 18-9 and got his first Cy Young. He got […]
