Oakland Athletics announce promotion of Mark Kotsay, 46, from third-base coach to manager

The Oakland Athletics announced, on Tuesday, the hiring of Mark Kotsay as their next manager. Kotsay, 46, was Oakland’s third-base coach last season and is a former bench coach with the Athletics. He now takes over for Bob Melvin, who left to manage the San Diego Padres. Kotsay is a former major league outfielder who played for seven clubs, including the Athletics. He finished his career with 127 home runs, 720 RBIs and a .276 batting average. The Athletics, who have long been an American League contender with a small payroll, continue to compete for postseason appearances. Oakland was deep in the mix […]

In his most explosive outing with the Brooklyn Nets, Kevin Durant scored the most points in an NBA game this season, going off for 51 in a 116-104 victory over the Pistons on Sunday at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. With James Harden resting for the first time this season, Durant joined Golden State’s Stephen Curry as the only players with a 50-point game this season. Durant made 16 of 31 shots from the field, including five 3-pointers, and had 9 assists, 7 rebounds and 2 blocked shots to overwhelm the Pistons, who lost for the 12th consecutive time. “Kevin was incredible,” Nets coach Steve Nash said. “Not an […]

Los Angeles Angels re-sign closer Raisel Iglesias to $58 million deal

Closer Raisel Iglesias agreed to a four-year, $58 million deal Wednesday night to stay with the Los Angeles Angels. He gets $10 million next year and $16 million in each of the following three seasons. Iglesias was outstanding in his first season with the Angels after they got him in a trade with Cincinnati a year ago. The Cuban right-hander had 34 saves while going 7-5 with a 2.57 ERA and 103 strikeouts with only 12 walks in 65 appearances. His 8.58 strikeout-to-walk ratio was the best of his career, and he finished 11th in the AL Cy Young voting while repeatedly going […]

Houston Astros keep ace Justin Verlander with one-year, $25 million deal

The Houston Astros and right-hander Justin Verlander have agreed to a one-year, $25 million contract with a player option for a second season, sources confirmed to ESPN on Wednesday. Verlander won the American League Cy Young Award for Houston in 2019 but made just one appearance during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season due to an elbow troubles. He had surgery to repair an ulnar collateral ligament Sept. 30, 2020, and missed all of the 2021 season, his last before the end of his contract with the Astros. He held a showcase for about 20 teams earlier this month and looked healthy and sharp, Astros general […]

Cody Bellinger evokes 2019 MVP prowess with 2-run double in Dodgers’ Game 2 win

For a brief, fleeting moment — the amount of time it took Giants reliever Dominic Leone’s sixth-inning fastball to travel from his hand to the plate — Cody Bellinger looked like the guy who was the 2019 National League MVP. Bellinger was balanced and quick, two elements of successful hitting that have eluded him all season. The result was a two-run double to left-center that put the Dodgers ahead 4-1 and set the stage for what became a 9-2 victory in Game 2 of the National League Division Series on Saturday. Bellinger hit .165 with a .542 OPS this season, unfathomably bad numbers for a player who […]

San Diego Padres fire Jayce Tingler after falling short of big goals

The San Diego Padres have fired Jayce Tingler, who presided over the biggest collapse in franchise history just a season after finishing second in voting for National League Manager of the Year. President of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller announced the move Wednesday, three days after the Padres finished 79-83 and in third place in the NL West, 28 games behind the San Francisco Giants. Tingler will be given the chance to stay in the organization. “Jayce accomplished a great deal in his two seasons with the Padres, leading our team through an unprecedented pandemic and into the postseason for the […]

Belt homers twice for career-best 19, Giants drub Mets 8-0

Brandon Belt hit two of San Francisco’s four home runs to push his career-best total to 19, rookie Sammy Long pitched into the sixth inning and the Giants trounced the slumping New York Mets 8-0 Tuesday night. After using late-game homers to steal consecutive triumphs from Oakland on Saturday and Sunday, San Francisco powered up early at Citi Field. LaMonte Wade Jr. and Mike Yastrzemski also connected in the first four innings as the Giants jumped to a 7-0 advantage against rookie Tylor Megill (1-3). The lone concern for the Giants: seven-time All-Star catcher Buster Posey was removed with right knee discomfort in the fifth, one inning after being visited behind the […]

Mike Trout not giving up on return to Los Angeles Angels this season

Mike Trout says he is still aiming to come back to the Los Angeles Angels’ lineup this campaign despite a lengthy and frustrating recovery from a calf injury that has sidelined him since May 17. The three-time American League MVP said Saturday before a game in Cleveland that he hasn’t given any thought to shutting it down for the year. “I’m just trying to get back,” Trout said. “Obviously, we’re running out of time here, but my main focus is to get back on the field no matter when it is.” The center fielder stated he thought he’d already be back after […]

Los Angeles Angels have no plans to shut down Mike Trout for season

Los Angeles Angels general manager Perry Minasian reiterated Wednesday that there aren’t any plans to shut down star outfielder Mike Trout for the rest of the campaign. The three-time American League MVP has not played since May 17 after going on the injured list with a right calf strain. The original prognosis was six to eight weeks, but Trout has been out of the lineup for 12 weeks since sustaining the injury. Wednesday marked the 75th match that Trout missed, which is his longest stint of missed games in his 11-year career. Trout’s progress stalled after he felt some discomfort after a couple […]
