Andrey Rublev wins Madrid Open, his ‘most proud title’

Andrey Rublev rallied to beat Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets on Sunday and win the Madrid Open for the first time. Rublev won 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 after Auger-Aliassime double-faulted on the last point of the final at the clay-court tournament in the Spanish capital. It was the second Masters 1000 title for the eighth-ranked Rublev. The 26-year-old Russian also won at Monte Carlo last year. Auger-Aliassime was playing in his first final at this level. “Congrats to Andrey. Very deserving winner. Congrats to you and your team. I tried til the end,” Auger-Aliassime said in saluting the winner and the crowd after […]

Liverpool back on track with 4-2 win over hapless Spurs

Liverpool finally found some form in a 4-2 Premier League triumph over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday in much-loved manager Juergen Klopp’s penultimate game at Anfield. Strikes from Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, Cody Gakpo and Harvey Elliott secured a much needed victory for Klopp’s men, who had won one of their previous five league matches and seen their title challenge crumble. While still mathematically in with a chance finishing top of the pile, they are five points off leaders Arsenal in the table with two games left and four points behind holders Manchester City, who have a game in hand over both. “It was a disappointing few weeks where the results were not what we […]

Hannah Green again wins LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship

Hannah Green won the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship for the second consecutive year Sunday, holing out twice from off the greens in a pivotal back-nine stretch at challenging Wilshire Country Club. A year after making a 25-foot birdie on the final hole of regulation and winning on the second hole of a playoff, Green — with help from Maja Stark — took the late drama out of this one for her fifth LPGA Tour triumph and second of the year. “It wasn’t as a eventful as the last couple days. I was nervous,” Green said. “And I’ve never […]

Stefanos Tsitsipas overwhelmed by Monte Carlo title win

Stefanos Tsitsipas swept aside Casper Ruud 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday to win the clay-court Monte Carlo Masters for the third time in four years and then wept in his chair. Ferrari’s gains see it emerge as Red Bull’s nearest rival

Although still 20 seconds shy of Max Verstappen’s Red Bull at the chequered flag, Ferrari’s performance at the Japanese Grand Prix showed just how much progress the team has made with its winter of car development. Just six months ago, the Italian team concluded the same race 40 seconds adrift of race winner Verstappen, ranking fourth and sixth in the final classification compared to Sunday’s third and fourth. Defeating Red Bull in a consecutive fight (i.e., without the help of a Verstappen retirement, as happened in Australia this year) still seems like a stretch, but on the right circuit in the right circumstances, […]
