Andy Murray (abdominal strain) withdraws from Cincinnati Open

Andy Murray pulled out of the Cincinnati Open late Monday with an abdominal strain. The 36-year-old keeps recovering from the injury as he prepares to compete in the US Open that starts later this month in New York. Cincinnati is among some of the tournaments that players view as tune-ups for the Open. Murray withdrew from last week’s Canadian Open before his round-of-16 clash with eventual champion Jannik Sinner due to the strain. He first felt the injury after spending nearly five hours on court in triumphs over Lorenzo Sonego and Max Purcell. Looking for the best online betting site and Live betting? Visit Heritage Sports! Mikael Ymer suspended for 18 months over doping test appearance

Sweden’s Mikael Ymer has been suspended from professional tennis for 18 months after the International Tennis Federation appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport when he was initially cleared of three whereabout failures. Ymer, 24, stated he had been charged with a potential anti-doping rule violation in January 2022 for missing three out-of-competition test attempts in a 12-month period. Ymer said he had fought the charges in a hearing and was cleared by an independent tribunal in June 2022 but that the ITF had appealed the decision. The CAS stated the ITF had requested a two-year period of ineligibility, but the […]

Carlos Alcaraz takes care of business in Wimbledon opener

In just his third Wimbledon tournament, Carlos Alcaraz is already one of the main men to defeat. The top-seeded Spanish player hasn’t been past the fourth round at the All England Club, but he has become the primary threat in Novak Djokovic’s quest for a record-equaling eighth men’s title at the grass-court Grand Slam. On Tuesday, Alcaraz defeated Jeremy Chardy 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 on Court 1 — a fitting location for the No. 1 player in the world. The match was played under the roof because rain affected play on the outside courts for the second consecutive day. “Obviously without the roof, with sun, […]

Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek get No. 1 seeds for Wimbledon

Carlos Alcaraz — not four-time defending champion Novak Djokovic — and Iga Swiatek were seeded No. 1 for Wimbledon on Wednesday, as expected, because the All England Club adhered to the ATP and WTA rankings. Alcaraz overtook Djokovic atop the men’s standings on Monday. Djokovic has not played since collecting his men’s record 23rd Grand Slam title at the French Open on June 11 and slid to No. 2, while Alcaraz rose one spot after winning a grass-court tuneup tournament at Queen’s Club on Sunday. Djokovic has collected the championship at Wimbledon each of the past four times it was held — and seven times overall — but he did […]

Carlos Alcaraz tops Arthur Rinderknech in Queen’s Club opener

Carlos Alcaraz came from a set down Tuesday to defeat lucky loser Arthur Rinderknech in the top-seeded player’s first match at the grass-court Queen’s Club Championships. Alcaraz won 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 (3) versus the No. 83-ranked Rinderknech, a French player who only found out he was playing following the withdrawal of Arthur Fils a couple of hours before the match. Alcaraz faced difficulties in dealing with Rinderknech’s big serve and net coverage in what was the No. 2-ranked Spaniard’s seventh career match on grass, and first outside Wimbledon. Jannik Sinner loses French Open five-setter to Daniel Altmaier

Jannik Sinner wasted two match points as he was knocked out of the French Open 6-7 (0), 7-6 (7), 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5 in a second-round thriller versus German Daniel Altmaier on Thursday. Sinner, a red-haired Italian who is often cheered on by six fans dressed as carrots — the Carota boys — and was spotted eating carrots as an on-court snack in Vienna, was not his dominant self as he bowed out after 5 hours, 26 minutes. The No. 8-seeded Sinner, whose best performance at Roland Garros came in 2020 when he lost in the quarterfinals to Rafael Nadal, looked set for a […]

Carlos Alcaraz No. 1 in rankings; Novak Djokovic falls to No. 3

Carlos Alcaraz replaced Novak Djokovic at No. 1 in the ATP rankings Monday, earning the top seeding at the French Open, and Daniil Medvedev’s Italian Open title moved him up to No. 2 ahead of the year’s second Grand Slam tournament. Djokovic’s loss in the fourth round as the defending champion in Rome dropped him to No. 3. That means he and Alcaraz could end up in the same half of the Roland Garros bracket and be set up for a potential semifinal showdown, depending on what happens in Thursday’s draw in Paris. The French Open, which starts Sunday, will mark the first chance […]

Rafael Nadal pulls out of French Open, expects ’24 to be last year

Rafael Nadal revealed Thursday that he is pulling out of the French Open because of a lingering hip injury that has sidelined him since January and that he expects 2024 to be the final season of his tennis career. The owner of a record 14 championships at the clay-court Grand Slam tournament will miss it for the first time. He made his debut there in 2005. Nadal, who turns 37 next month, delivered the news of his withdrawal — and future plans — during a news conference at his tennis academy in Manacor, Spain. He stated he does not want to […]

Andy Murray overcomes Tommy Paul for first title since 2019

Andy Murray bounced back to defeat world No. 17 Tommy Paul 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 on Sunday in the Aix-en-Provence Challenger Tour final, earning his first title at any level since 2019. The three-time major winner converted four of nine breakpoints to claim his first clay title since 2016, a boost for the 35-year-old who stated he hoped to play the French Open later this month despite suffering early exits from Madrid and Monaco. It was Murray’s third triumph over a top-20 player this year and the twice Olympic gold medalist is expected to climb from 52nd to 42nd in the rankings after Sunday’s […]
