Chicago White Sox announce deal with Cuban slugger Oscar Colas

The Chicago White Sox added another name to their rich Cuban history when they revealed Tuesday they had agreed to a contract with outfielder Oscar Colás. Considered one of the top international free agents, Colás received a $2.7 million signing bonus. The team also announced it had agreed to terms with outfielder Erick Hernández in a deal that included a $1 million bonus. Colás, 23, is from Santiago de Cuba. He bats and throws left-handed and hit .282 with 28 homers and 116 RBIs in 187 games over his foreign league career. Colás also has worked as a pitcher, but Marco Paddy, […]

Houston Astros finish off Chicago White Sox to reach 5th straight ALCS as Tony La Russa fumes over ‘intentional’ Jose Abreu plunking

The Houston Astros advanced to their fifth consecutive American League Championship Series on Tuesday by defeating the Chicago White Sox 10-1 in Game 4 of their best-of-five division series matchup. The Astros are the third team ever to appear in five consecutive league championship series, and first to do so since the Atlanta Braves reached eight straight from 1991 to 1999. For the second time in five days, Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. held the White Sox’s offense in check, giving up just a solo home run, to designated hitter Gavin Sheets, in the second inning. But McCullers left the game after four innings due to right forearm tightness. His […]

Jiménez hits 3-run HR, rallies White Sox past Royals 5-3

Eloy Jiménez logged his first big hit of the season, launching a go-ahead, three-run homer in the eighth inning that sent the Chicago White Sox over the Kansas City Royals 5-3 Tuesday night. The 24-year-old slugger, who was the 2019 AL Rookie of the Year and then kept up his power surge during the pandemic-shortened season, tore a pectoral muscle in spring training. He hadn’t played in the majors until going 0 for 4 Monday night. But Jiménez quickly made up for lost time in his second match. After hitting a single in his first at-bat, he came up in the eighth after a […]

Keuchel, Grandal lead White Sox past Blue Jays 5-2

Dallas Keuchel pitched six effective innings, Yasmani Grandal homered and the Chicago White Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 5-2 on Thursday night. Led by Keuchel, Chicago closed out a 5-2 homestand and improved its AL Central lead to a season-high 4 1/2 games over idle Cleveland. Adam Engel also went deep, and reigning AL MVP José Abreu hit two RBI doubles. It was the first match for the White Sox since they placed second baseman Nick Madrigal on the injured list with a torn right hamstring. Madrigal got hurt when he tried to beat out a grounder in the seventh inning of Wednesday night’s 6-2 loss to Toronto. Chicago has […]

New York Mets, catcher James McCann finalizing four-year deal

Catcher James McCann and the New York Mets are finalizing a four-year deal for $40 million-plus, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The Athletic first reported the sides were close to a deal. McCann, 30, shared catching duties last season with Yasmani Grandal, whose deal with the Chicago White Sox last offseason averaged $18.3 million per season — a record in free agency for a catcher. McCann had a career-high .289 batting average with seven home runs and 15 RBIs in 31 matches during the pandemic-shortened season, cutting down on his strikeout rate after a career-worst 137 strikeouts in 2019. Despite the Grandal deal (four years, $73 million), […]

Yoan Moncada rejoins White Sox from 10 day injury list

Yoán Moncada is back with the White Sox, and that’s good news when it comes to his ability to be a part of the Opening Day roster. Moncada was located on the 10-day injured list last Friday, and with no reason or timetable for his return provided by the White Sox, there were legitimate questions as to whether he’d be ready for Opening Day on July 24. But back in major league camp with a week before the season begins, Moncada could have enough ramp-up time to be ready for the season-opener versus the Minnesota Twins. Whether a week will be […]

Edwin Encarnacion signs with White Sox

Encarnacion reportedly agreed on Wednesday to a free-agent contract with Chicago for one year and $12 million. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman first reported that the deal was close before others reported that the deal was completed. The soon-to-be 37-year-old is one of the most accomplished power hitters of the past decade. Over the last eight campaings, he’s led MLB in total homers and RBIs, hitting no less than 32 long balls in each year during that span and reaching the 100-RBI mark six times.  The White Sox will be his fifth club in the last four years. After more than seven seasons — […]
